Autumn List Recap 2024

by Liz Heather in Personal

Ottawa, Ontario

Ottawa, Ontario

Today is the last day of autumn and was it just me or did it feel a year long? It’s one of the greatest seasons so it felt good to drag on, but man - summer feels like a decade ago. Here’s how my autumn list of things went!

1. Make pasta from scratch.

Didn’t even KINDA do this one. I think you need to be in a very secure place mentally to want to make pasta from scratch?

2. Go to Downey’s Farm or a harvest festival.

Did it. And I feel awful saying this, but I think I’m over it? Maybe it’s a temporary feeling.

3. Make a turkey poutine.

I’m mad that I forgot this one.

4. Make an apple or pumpkin savory dish.

Okay, this is getting embarrassing.

5. See the salmon run.

Didn’t even see them swim.

1/5! My take on this low score is that I was busier getting my life together this season so I didn’t have much time for small luxuries, so I’m counting this as a win. But I hope to get at least 2/5 next season, so we shall see. Winter list coming tomorrow…

Summer List 2024 Recap

by Liz Heather in Personal

Lake Ontario

Lake Ontario

All right so that was the longest summer that ever summered. I don’t think I’ve ever had highs and lows are big as the ones that have happened these past few months, but I wouldn’t change a single second. Here’s a recap of how my summer list of things to do went.

1. Go to a carnival.

  • Went! It was in a parking lot in Queens, but that still counts.

2. Eat the soft serve at either Seed + Mill in Chelsea Market or at L’Industrie.

  • Did it! The Seed + Mill (vegan) tahini soft serve changed my life.

3. Get out of town somewhere fun to celebrate our 15 year anniversary.

  • We went to Cooperstown! And I wrote about it over here.

4. Go swimming at least five times.

  • Oh, I demolished this one. Went over ten times for sure.

5. Make this truffled garlic bread with ricotta.

  • Did not do! Definitely forgot about this one. But really this is more of a holiday appetizer so stay tuned.

4/5! Very proud of that. Should I be proud of mostly completely a list of purely fun things to do? Absolutely yes. Organized fun should never be reserved only for children.

Autumn list coming tomorrow!

Spring List 2023

by Liz Heather in Personal

Baby Dog in Central Park

Baby Dog in Central Park

Welcome to the best time of the year! The hours are longer, it’s still cold outside and the birds simply will not shut up - what more could you want?

Here’s what I’d love to do this spring.

1. Deep clean my apartment and donate all the clothing I haven’t worn in years.

2. Prepare steak Diane at home.

3. Finally have lunch at S&P.

4. See the cherry blossoms in Central Park. (There’s a tracker to see what’s blooming before you go.)

5. Finally tour the old City Hall subway station.

As always, I encourage you to make your own spring list, even if it’s just two fun things you’d like to do. We’re all busy and I get that these lists may seem childish, but let’s be honest - I’m a lot happier than most people my age, so I think I’m onto something here. Just a thought.

If you’re looking for some ideas for yourself, here are some past spring lists I’ve made:

Spring 2022, Spring 2021, Spring 2020, Spring 2019, Spring 2018 and Spring 2016.

Winter List 2022 Revisited

by Liz Heather in Personal

Snow on trees might be the answer to everything, March 2023

Snow on trees might be the answer to everything, March 2023

It really feels like I made this winter list about a year ago. Here’s how it went!

1. Take at least five bubble baths.

  • C’mon, I’m not an amateur. Of course I did this one.

2. Finally get my own ice skates and skate around this beautiful rink.

  • Bought skates! I couldn’t get to that gorgeous rink in Huntsville, but I did manage to skate on this wonderful figure-eight rink in Etobicoke.

3. Go skiing.

  • Sadly, no. But this is top priority this year.

4. Make lasagna soup.

  • Made! Ate! Loved!

Lasagna Soup - looks horrifying, tastes heavenly

5. See at least two Broadway plays.

  • Death of a Salesman, Moulin Rouge and Shucked!
