The Chocolate Chip Cookie at Smile-To-Go in NYC

by Liz Heather in Best of NYC, Food

This is my best friend Harmeet eating one of the best cookies I've had in New York City. Is there such thing as a bad chocolate chip cookie? That remains to be seen. But this one? If you're in the area (Soho), GET ONE. And yes, that's sea salt on top. All the best cookies have sea salt on top.

I've heard that their menu has a lot of other gems as well, but please oh please go eat this guy.

NYC Line Waiting Service

by Liz Heather in Best of NYC

This guy's job is to wait in line for you. Is it just me or is that a brilliant idea? He runs SOLD Inc. (Same Ole Line Dudes) and they charge $25 for the first hour and $10 for each additional half hour on a queue anywhere in New York City. Personally I have all the time in the world to wait in lines at this point in my life, but for others who don't? Such a genius idea. This man is gonna do so well.

You can find out more here.

Chinatown Fair Arcade

by Liz Heather in Best of NYC

8 Mott Street

8 Mott Street

This is the only place in New York that I know of where you can cheaply play some air hockey. Does that warrant a post? Umm... derr?

Yes, it's tiny as hell but it's open 365 days a year (which I consider notable in this city). It's pretty much a basic arcade where the games are relatively cheap and the prizes you can get with tickets are basically trash (but I'll assume you're not going to an arcade for prizes). The place is filled with mostly kids and teenagers (not the obnoxious type of teens - but the nice ones who take each other on cute dates and laugh loud), so it's a pretty fun place to go with someone for a game if you're in the area.

Poutine in NYC

by Liz Heather in Best of NYC, Food

The poutine at Mile End? Probably the best you're going to find in this city. The small, classic poutine is $9, which is a bit steep, but it's city-prices so that sort of makes sense (though it's only $8 at the Brooklyn location). If you're looking for just any old cheese & fries combo, well, you can go get your disco fries fix somewhere else. This is definitely the place to go when you're missing Canada.

(Please note: I do not acknowledge disco fries. And I will not discuss the differences between these two fry dishes with you. It's 2014. You should know what a poutine is.)

The Signature Facial at Metamorphosis Day Spa in NYC

by Liz Heather in Beauty, Best of NYC, Reviews

If you take part in only one self-servicing, luxurious act this week/month/year/what-have-you, then please arrange to have this facial.

I have taken part in a lifetime total of three facials in my twenty-eight years, and this last one makes me want to re-adjust all of my current priorities. The fact that it's a ninety-minute facial was the first thing I loved about it since, well, that's a long time. And when things take a long time, they're usually worth doing. And in that time, some crazy peels, masks and other unworldly things took place. What "unworldly" thing am I talking about? Um, I don't know - THE EXTRACTIONS! Do you, simple human, know what that means? Because, at the time, I did not. And it soon became my favourite part.

“An extraction is the process of clearing a clogged or compacted pore by manual or mechanical means. Extractions are often performed as part of a facial. Most people need at least a couple of extractions during each facial, though you may require more extractions if this is your first facial.”

(Imagine there were photos here of my extractions being done? I don't know if you and me are quite there yet, but just know that I was thinking about it. Would've been gross and beautiful somehow at the same, I think.)

Anyway, it was best part of the facial. A trained professional? Handling my pimps? In a neat-ass way with high-tech equipment? UM, that's amazing. The whole experience was phenomenal and I will definitely go back for another.

Rocky The Musical on Broadway

by Liz Heather in Best of NYC, Events

My brother Gary often says that I give everything a good review. He has compared it to when Homer becomes a food critic.

But you know that's not true. I can hate just as strongly as I can love. But that being said - this musical is probably THE BEST THING YOU CAN SEE ON BROADWAY RIGHT NOW.

Really. And I was honestly not expecting this good a time. It totally won me over mid-way through. At intermission, I was all, "Yeah, I get it. It's okay." And then the second act happened and suddenly my face was no longer part of my body - because it was blown away.

Did I like the movie Rocky? I did, it's a great movie. Am I crazy in love with that movie? No. I have other loves. And that's fine, calm down. My point is that you can still love this production. And if you see it and don't love it? That's... weird. I'll have no idea how to carry on a conversation with you because it was fantastic and should be enjoyed by everyone who sees it.

The sets were better than any I've ever seen on any stage - and maybe that seems abnormal to note, but you'll understand that more if you get a look at them. They're impeccable. The music? Meh. The music really wasn't anything special. And honestly, the fact that the songs weren't great and yet I still had a fun time should speak volumes. Definitely go see this. There are things I want to tell you specifically about why it was so originally well done, but if you're actually considering seeing it then I don't want to be the one to ruin certain cool things that happen when watching. It was such a great time. Go.

You can purchase tickets here.

Hitchcock at Film Forum in NYC

by Liz Heather in Best of NYC, Events

Film Forum in New York is showing a crazy amount of Hitchcock films from Friday, February 21st through to Thursday, March 27th, which is all well and good, yes. But tonight, for their showings of North By Northwest and Blackmail - there's going to be "live piano accompaniment".

And I'm sorry, but does that not sound incredible? Such a neat idea. Definitely going. Tickets are $13. The full schedule can be found on their website.

Yeah, you'll only care about this post if you're somewhat near NYC or Astoria and go mad for antiques and/or old-garbage-that-nobody-wants. (Don't be ashamed of being into that if you are, I am and I'm okay with it.)

Everything is 50% off right now until they close sometime in the middle or end of March. Click through the photos below to see some of what's still available.

I was going to buy that tiny-as-hell, adorable birdhouse since it's only $5, but then realized I'd be constantly filling it up, which wouldn't be as adorable.

Kee's Chocolate in NYC

by Liz Heather in Best of NYC, Food

White chocolate almond, white chocolate pistachio, dark chocolate black rose and dark chocolate Earl Grey

White chocolate almond, white chocolate pistachio, dark chocolate black rose and dark chocolate Earl Grey

If I'm not eating these chocolate truffles or these cake truffles, I shall most likely be eating these guys. I've been wanting to try them for awhile since every chocolate-loving person existing in New York City has mentioned this place to me.

If that picture above doesn't make them look appetizing, well, I took it - so my apologies. They're actually ridiculously tasty.

Was it smart of me to go and buy some chocolates here three days before Valentine's Day? Nope, not at all. The ones I really wanted to try (the crème brûlée, the keylime, the balsamic and the blended pepper) were of course sold out. But thankfully, the ones above were available and sublime.

I completely understand why people won't shut up about this place. Even the bad-sounding flavours are crazy good. Go. Eat them. You can see all the flavours they have here.
