First of the Month Checklist
I love the first day of the month. There's just something about starting a new month that makes you feel like you can get tons and tons of stuff done. And whether that's true or not, the idea behind it makes me hopeful. Is it just me who feels that way?
The one thing I do every time this day comes around is check off my list of monthly things that need to get done. I really think that everyone should have one of these lists. How else are you supposed to stay on top of things? And if you're unsure of what types of things should be on this list, feel free to take a glance at mine.
My Monthly Checklist
- Clear out any old food from the fridge and clean the shelves.
- Choose my next book to read.
- Set a goal of how many times I expect myself to go to the gym (this varies depending on the season - I go less in the summertime since I'm outdoors more compared with the winter when I need to up my gym dosage since I spend so much time indoors, not moving as much).
- Set a spending budget (which takes into consideration birthday gifts, holidays, etc.)
- Clean out my car (this was, obviously, for the times when I had a car).
- Check Barnes & Noble for any author events that I might want to go to.
- Buy greeting cards if there are any family or friends' birthdays this month.
- Wash the bed sheets (should I be doing this more than once a month? Hope not. That's a lot of work).
- Clean and polish any shoes that are looking rough.
- Go through emails and respond to anything that's ridiculously late.
That's it! Pretty good list, eh? I think so.
Family Birthdays Board
I'm not suggesting that everyone needs to buy one of these since that's insane, but a board like this seems like it might be fairly easy to assemble yourself. And once the people in your family start having babies, you'll kind of need to have something like this somewhere in your house to keep track of everyone. Such a good idea.
Hoverboard
Ummm... WHAT IS HAPPENING.
Smell Based Alarm Clock
Paris-based entrepreneur Guillaume Rolland has invented the “SensorWake,” the world’s first scented alarm clock that will wake you up using smell instead of sound.
You can choose from a wide assortment of scents, like coffee, croissants, the ocean, or even the smell of money. Even Google recognizes its potential, awarding it as one of the top 15 inventions “that can change the world” at the 2014 Google Science Fair." You can fund it on Kickstarter, if you so please.
Amazing.
Wedding Dress Frame
I think everyone I know who's gotten married keeps their wedding dress in the same place - nestled in a high quality dry cleaning bag in the back of her closet. What the hell else are you supposed to do with it?
Here's an idea. THIS. DO THIS.
If this isn't the most perfect way to display it, then I don't know what is. Especially if you paid a ton for yours.
God, I love this idea.

Birthday Gift Idea
If someone close to you has an important birthday coming up, you know what you should do? This.
My friend Marla started sending me notes in the mail a month before my actual birthday (30 notes for my 30th birthday). What kind of notes, you ask? SWEET-ASS THINGS THAT SHE THINKS ABOUT ME! Compliment notes, if you will.
Is this the nicest thing in the world to receive? Why yes, yes it was. And some of them included gift-gifts too (like Urban Outfitters clothes & face masks!). Am I bragging? Fuck yeah! 'Cause this is one of the nicest things that anyone has ever done for me and I'm almost mad that I hadn't thought of it myself to do for someone else! You know what a fan I am of correspondence.
Anyway, definitely keep this in mind as a gift idea for a special birthday. Marla, you're the kindest person in the world and I'm lucky as FUCK to know you.
