Winter Wednesdays Vol. 4

by Liz Heather in Winter Wednesdays

I saw a coyote up close and personal yesterday and I can’t get him out of my head. I know he’s dangerous and all, but he looks like just a dog to me. A dog who could easily be a friend. My friend. Google searches for the past day:

But let me be clear, I’m not going to become friends with him. I repeat, I’m going to really try and not become friends with this misunderstood angel. Anyway, here’s what else happened this past week.

BAKING/COOKING

I made a batch of the Eleven Madison Park Granola (that they give you at the end of a meal as a take-home gift) and it turned out wonderfully. I did ignore the main instructions and followed the ones given from someone who used to work there (noted in the comment section), and I’m so glad I did. Would absolutely make again.

This week’s Winter Wednesdays can be read over here.

The Best of December

by Liz Heather in Best of NYC, Personal

Christmas was really nice this year. I almost threw out my dollar store gawdy snow-lined garland that I’ve had for years because for a moment I thought it might look too trashy. But I waited a few days and realized nope - I love that tacky stuff. It reminds me of my childhood/80s Christmas decor so I kept it. And then that thought made me wonder why I was doubting it in the first place and realized that it’s my damn Instagram feed. My feed was trying to tell me that not only are my choices bad, but the Pinterest “chiq” ones were the right ones maybe? I know that people are saying that Instagram is giving off dying mall vibes right now and I really hope it’s true. There’s so much slop. It’s enough already. Anyway, here’s what went down last month.

  • I compiled the best tweets of the month over here.

  • I know Christmas is over, but I still stand by these great NYC related gifts.

  • I made a list of my favourites of 2025.

  • All right this is just a PSA if you live in New York City. You know how to have an OMNY card now? REGISTER IT. No one tells you that once you register it, you can access the unlimited 7-day plan again (in the same way that you could with a Metrocard). They don’t advertise this and it’s infuriating. I loathe OMNY, but please pass on this message because barely anyone knows that you’re supposed to register it if you want the benefits of ever using the unlimited option. You can register your card here.

  • I wrote about all the new years traditions that I follow each year.

  • I finished up Fall Fridays (Volume 10, Volume 11 and Volume 12).

  • I began Winter Wednesdays because I can’t physically not talk about what I do each week (Volume 1 and Volume 2 so far).

  • I went on Nathan’s podcast for the first time in a long time.

  • Still very much in love with my kitchen ring holder for when I’m baking.

The rest of this post can be read over here.

Fall Fridays Volume 12

by Liz Heather in Fall Fridays

Waldorf Astoria, December 2025

Waldorf Astoria, December 2025

Last week of autumn, LET’S DO THIS. This will be the final Fall Fridays of 2025, so thank you for being here! I love writing these and all the eyes that read them.

BAKING/COOKING

Slow-cooker meatballs, Ina Garten’s cauliflower toast, BLT skewers, homemade Levain-dupe peanut butter chip cookies. Holiday cooking is in full swing, I can’t be stopped.

BLT Skewers

Levain dupe peanut butter chip cookies

CRAVING

The Thanksgiving egg rolls at Sweet Afton in Astoria. Good god, they’re unbelievable.

DRINKING

I had a Manhattan the other night and how on earth did I ever drink three of those a night?! That seems wild to me now. It’s made me not want to have another cocktail for at least a few months. I never thought I’d be this turned off of alcohol, but it’s felt amazing.

You can read the rest of this post over here.

Fall Fridays Volume 11

by Liz Heather in Fall Fridays

Christmastime in New York is so lovely I could scream. Yes there are lots of people everywhere, but the coldness combined with the decorations is pretty magical. It’s supposed to snow on Sunday and if it does I might just explode.

The Best of May 2025

by Liz Heather in Beauty, Best of NYC, Food, Movies, Personal, Products, Recipes, Television

Forever favourite blue

Forever favourite blue

This has been the longest spring of all time and I’m not complaining. Here’s what went down last month.

  • The best tweets of the month can be found over here.

  • I finally reviewed last year’s Met costume exhibit (this year’s 2025 exhibit review can be read over here).

  • Bought/love this travel box for jewelry. Also got these great swim trunks for Nathan (love non-bland menswear).

  • A bunch of new candles came out at Trader Joe’s so obviously I’m on it.

  • Got this great quilted sweatshirt for $10 on sale at Banana Republic Factory.

  • Made this sausage, pesto, ricotta pasta on repeat for a few nights. Also made this bread pudding with vanilla sauce for a friend’s birthday that really turned out well.

  • I visited the new Printemps (french department store) in the city, which is really lovely. The design of the space is worth seeing if you’re in the area. Keep in mind that practically nothing is priced under $100.

Printemps in NYC

  • We went to Ruta in Astoria, which is probably the best Mexican in the neighborhood by far. Their deep red salsa will fix you.

At Ruta in Astoria, Queens

  • Here were my favourite Met Gala looks this year:

Kerry Washington at the Met Gala, 2025

Katy Perry at the Met Gala, 2025

Nicole Kidman at the Met Gala, 2025

Cardi B at the Met Gala, 2025

  • So I tried a retinol night serum on my face and I was warned that some flakiness might occur but this was next level flake city. I had to stop. I also do not care about the benefits of retinol, so let’s never speak of it again.

  • The chain Toasties in the city? What garbage! Never again. How do you mess up lunch?

  • I can’t stop texting this image to people (below).

  • I was looking for a new (not drugstore) mascara and I found a fantastic one - the Glossier Lash Slick. In love with the wand, it catches every single little hair.

  • I tried the Trader Joe’s strawberry gluten free muffins and they were okay, but nothing can top their GF cinnamon coffee cake ones.

  • I was invited to see Mel Robbins at The Beacon (with a very lovely new friend) and I’ve got to be honest. This woman is… just not for me. I’m happy that people seem to get something out of what she says, but I just can’t. Wellness can’t be bought and I will die on that hill.

  • Marla came for a visit and it was a blast. She stayed at The New Yorker hotel (which was old, wonderful and perfect), we did a million things in 48 hours and ate at Modern Bread & Bagel approx. twenty times. It was perfect.

  • Was so, so pleased that she agreed with me about how incredible the tart frozen yogurt is at Madison Fare.

Madison Fare frozen yogurt with raspberry

  • She also treated us to a Broadway show (this woman cannot be stopped in her generosity), so we saw Real Women Have Curves. And it was good!

  • I poached some salmon in a coconut cream sauce and it didn’t come out that great, so I think I’ll just stick to baked salmon.

  • I think I’m suffering from Pinterest-aesthetic-brain-overload because I was on such a mission (for some reason?) to find a perfect black cardigan to layer with some outfits I have - and I found one at Uniqlo. But once I tried it on I realized how very basic-white-woman it is and put it back. It can be very hard to fight these things that the internet tells me that I’m supposed to have. (I did buy this great baseball t-shirt, though.)

  • I went to Edith’s for the tahini iced coffee and it was very good. I also tried a bite of their chicken caesar and it was nothing special. Main reason to go here is definitely the coffee.

Edith’s tahini iced coffee in the West Village, NYC

Edith’s in the West Village, NYC

  • I got a lash lift and it’s only week one, but I can see the appeal of getting them done. I’ve been using Nulastin for a few months and I’ve been seeing length, but they’re not very curly so I guess we’ll see if this makes a longterm difference or not.

  • We went to visit the town where the original Friday the 13th was filmed (it’s just under two hours from NYC) and it was so much fun. I’ll do a full post on it here soon. We also went to a wedding in the Poconos and it was such a great weekend.

  • Some things I watched:

    • Final Destination Bloodlines - not as awful as I expected! The beginning scene was the most memorable/best part.

    • And Just Like That (newest season) - okay, this was the craziest part of the first episode:

  • …what the hell? Were we all supposed to think that is a normal thing to say? Infact this insane sentence is making me want to do a deep dive on ALL of the wildly dumb things these women have said over decades and we all have just eaten it right up and accepted as normal! Madness.

Some things I’m looking forward to this month: I really want to go to Modern Bread & Bread for their night menu, I want to make this chicken Diane recipe at home, I think I’m going to start doing my Summer Saturday posts again starting this week (the season starts when I says it does) and I might have to pre-order the Jaws popcorn bucket (below).

September Shenanigans 2024

by Liz Heather in Beauty, Food, Ideas, Links, Movies, Personal, Products, Quotes, Recipes, Television

Early autumn sunsets >>

Early autumn sunsets >>

Welcome to the absolute best time of year.

  • The best tweets of the month can be found over here.

  • I wrote about going to Cooperstown, New York.

  • I compiled my favourite summer photos.

  • I recapped how my summer list went.

  • I made an autumn list of things I’d like to do.

  • The AirTrain at JFK was half price for the entire summer! Am I the only one who finds that crazy? In a city where everything costs more with each passing day. Blown away by that. It’s back to the ridiculous/normal pricing now, but still.

  • I went to my first dog swim event (!) and it was absolutely heaven on earth. At the end of summer, public pools open up their pools on the last swim day of the season to let dogs go swimming and it’s as great as it sounds. (Baby Dog is too delicate to partake, but we watched from a safe distance.)

  • Forever a lover of autumn mums. And $9 for 9” ones at Home Depot? Get the hell out of here with that pricing. Amazing.

Autumn mums

  • I’ve been using GrandeLASH for almost a month now and I’m not really noticing that much of a difference, so if this doesn’t work I’ll give Revitalash a try and if that doesn’t work? I think I can officially say goodbye to lash serums at last. It’s too exhausting. I can’t care about tiny little pieces of hair for the rest of my life.

  • I will never shut up about how incredible this foot peel is from Target. I only need to use it twice a year and it gives you BABY SOFT feet.

  • Went to Dyments Farm in Dundas to try their burger and whoa. Definitely worth the drive.

Burger at Dyments Farm in Dundas, ON

  • In love with everything at Aerie right now, they’re reminding me of early Aritzia pieces (at the old Aritzia prices) and I should really shut up about it before it becomes like current Aritzia and therefore is way too expensive.

  • Came across a new way to do beach waves with a straightener and it totally works.

  • Are you aware that Staples recycles all old electronics? I brought in some old printers and it’s way easier than taking it to a dump.

  • Is The Ordinary a con? I have never had a positive experience with any of their products. Even the name makes me think they’re just messing with us?

  • Tried and absolutely loved the gluten-free Costco frozen pizza. Makes no sense.

  • The smash burgers at Oklahoma Burgers in Mississauga are decadent as hell.

Oklahoma Burgers in Mississauga, ON

  • Went to the Toronto Vintage Clothing Show for the first time in years and got an insanely nice coat. I only want fun coats for the rest of my life. Also got a mini glass bottle of perfume from the 40s to stay in my purse that was $5.

Perfumes at the Toronto Vintage Clothing Show

  • In love with this Simons belt.

  • I made these turkey meatballs from the LCBO magazine Food & Drink and they were pretty disappointing. Must remember to not trust all their recipes.

  • The dark chocolate pistachios from Trader Joe’s are unholy. Could eat bags and bags of them.

  • Ridiculously in love with the Whole Foods pumpkin bites. A perfect autumn bite.

Pumpkin bites at Whole Foods

  • Some things I watched:

    • The Perfect Couple: Okay, I could argue for an hour about how bad this was. Yes, a whodunit is fun. But that’s where the fun ended. It was so badly written and terribly shot. God, anything can be made these days.

    • The Trini episode of Atlanta: what a great episode. Makes me want to watch the rest of the show.

    • Only Murders in the Building: Really liking this season. The Perfect Strangers moments? Wonderful. I kind of need Richard Kind and Martin Short in a scene together soon though (Clifford reunion!).

    • English Teacher: best new show I’ve seen in SUCH a long time. I love the kid Jeff. The music choices are so good. So many good lines, I can’t even quote them all.

    • Mamma Mia: I’d never seen it, so we put it on and yikes. I truly hate singing in (most) movies. Fast-forwarded all the songs. Other than that, not a terrible movie.

    • Emily in Paris: this tweet really sums up the show.

    • Transformers: Rise of the Beasts: Only my ten year old nephew could get me to watch something like this. It wasn’t terrible! Weird to hear Pete Davidson in it, but definitely not the worst thing I’ve ever seen.

    • Hustlers: Not good. But Mister Bruce was the best part.

    • Rewatched: The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, Dangerous Minds, Barbarian, Old. All still great.

    • I’m watching tons of Twilight Zones episodes each night and this quote (below) from the episode Passage on the Lady Anne just swallowed me up.

“Love has its own particular point of view. It sees everything larger than life. Nothing is too ornate, too fanciful, too dramatic. Love demands the theatrical, and then transfigures it. It turns the grotesque into the lovely, as a child does. With it, we can see what we wish to see in other people. Without it, we can’t see anything at all. We can search forever, and never find.”
— The Twilight Zone

Some things I’m looking forward to this month: finishing up my Halloween costume, cooking everything for Thanksgiving, making the leftover sandwich and I really want to see the movie Hush.

Will forever love sunflowers at night

Ice Cold: An Exhibition of Hip-Hop Jewelry

by Liz Heather in Best of NYC

American Museum of Natural History, NYC

American Museum of Natural History, NYC

Whoever pitched this idea to the American Museum of Natural History needs a raise. Especially since I can’t remember the last time that this museum had a new exhibit that I was actually excited about. Don’t get me wrong, I love that giant whale and the almost-pitch-black room with the stuffed birds (please god don’t ever update that wing), but it’s pretty rare that the Natural History museum has an exhibit that people really anticipate.

The exhibition is included with a general admission ticket, so you really have no reason not to check it out. Here were my favourite pieces.

Biz Markie Nameplate necklace, 1986

In love with the font.

Flavor Flav Clock pendant, 1988

Okay, that clock is literal history.

Ghostface Killah Eagle arm band, 1990s

Absolutely love how over the top it is.

T-Pain Big Ass Chain necklace, 2000s

Honestly, genius. So funny and probably the best of the collection.

Cardi B Nipple covers, 2022

Perfect.

Tyler, The Creator Bellhop necklace, 2021

Jesus, that’s beautiful. Maybe I’m not wearing enough gold. Really reassessing my look after coming here.

The exhibit runs until January 5th, 2025 and you can see more posts like this on my latest newsletter.

Winter List 2023 Recap

by Liz Heather in Personal

Union Square Park, NYC

Union Square Park, NYC

It’s common to complain about how long winter is, but it’s the perfect amount of time. My only complaint about this season was how little snowfall there was, but that’s my issue every year with any amount of snow - it’s never enough. That being said, did I make the most of the season? According to my winter list, no. Haha. But according to real life? It was wonderful.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Liz Heather (@lizheather)

1. Go skiing.

  • I did not, but this one is truly not my fault because snow conditions were so poor this year.

2. Eat ramen for the first time.

  • Okay, no it didn’t happen. Was there a reason it didn’t? Nope. I just never found myself in the mood.

3. Make some Christmas-y appetizers (cranberry grilled cheese, charcuterie wreath, etc.)

  • Yes! Finally! And they were great.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Liz Heather (@lizheather)

4. Get the lobster bisque from The Soupman (the Seinfeld soup nazi) near Central Park (I haven’t eaten it in years and it’s incredible).

  • Fully forgot.

5. Find a snowmobile and ride it.

  • No snow = no snow mobiles, I don’t make the rules.

Okay, this list didn’t go very well with 1/5. But that’s okay. I suffer from a condition where you can delude yourself into thinking that your past failures don’t define you. Spring list coming tomorrow! And you can see more posts like this on my latest newsletter.

February Feats 2024

by Liz Heather in Beauty, Best of NYC, Food, Links, Movies, Personal, Television

NYC, February 2024

NYC, February 2024

Welcome to March! You’re well aware of how much I love this month. Will I overdo it and be left a shell of a person come April 1st? Most likely, but there’s nothing that can be done about that! Here’s what went down last month.

  • The best tweets of the month can be found over here.

  • I kept up with my weekly Winter Wednesdays series.

  • I finally finished the Mel Brooks memoir I’ve been reading for months.

  • If this coat (below) was under $100, then I would’ve had no choice but to buy it.

Bury me at the Nordstrom flagship

  • Some things I baked:

    • God, I love a small batch cookie recipe.

    • People won’t shut up about this New York Times marry-me chicken recipe but I absolutely would reject that proposal. I made it and it was FINE at best. And more recently, I made a cauliflower soup of theirs and it was bland as hell! I definitely need to take a step back from their recipes. Maybe the food styling is what’s tricking me? Gorgeous looking food doesn’t always taste amazing. There’s a lesson there??

    • I made this brioche berry bread pudding that was delicious. Something feels very wrong about using strawberries in February, but the Grand Marnier soak really helped the flavour.

Brioche berry bread pudding

  • I can’t stop wearing these Aerie brown stockings.

  • Found a new coffee shop that I’m loving - Sonbobs in Astoria.

  • We bought Baby Dog a ramp to get on and off our bed and it’s been a huge help. Sometimes she’ll just leap off into the pillows alongside it, so it may take some time for her to trust this new inanimate object in her life.

Baby Dog begrudgingly on her new ramp

  • I tried out a colour corrector from Huda because the internet told me to and it did absolutely nothing different to my face hahah?? Sometimes I seem smart and other times I do stuff like this.

  • Nathan and I saw the play An Enemy Of The People with Jeremy Strong (from Succession) and Michael Imperioli (from The Sopranos & The White Lotus) and it was great! Absolutely love the Circle in the Square theatre. $40 tickets straight from the box office can’t be beat.

  • The winter kale salad at Uva Next Door on the Upper East Side was top tier.

  • The patty melt at Daily Provisions? Wow. Makes zero sense that a coffee shop has that good a sandwich.

  • I’ve finally learned my lesson and I’ve stopped using third-party websites for booking travel. Took me decades to learn this lesson.

  • Also, I’m sure no one but me buys Visa gift cards - but just incase, stay very far away from the brand Vanilla. I’ve had so many issues with money that was loaded improperly and their customer service is nonexistent.

  • Some things I watched:

    • Sometimes I Think About Dying: so great! Our friend Dave does such a great job in it.

    • Two Weeks Notice and The Wedding Date (combining them because they don’t deserve individual billing): WOOF. Why do I do this to myself when I have a list full of actually watchable movies?

    • If Lucy Fell: an old Sarah Jessica Parker movie? Course I’d watch that. It actually wouldn’t have been so terrible if the main guy wasn’t such an awful actor. He wrote, directed and starred in it, which was the wrong decision.

    • Waiting To Exhale: such a great rewatch.

    • Once Upon A Crime: perfect rewatch. It’s baffling that this movie did so bad at the box office.

    • New season of Curb: ugh. I don’t want to be mean, but I really hate this show now. The storylines are so tired and it really didn’t need to come back at all. (Richard Lewis will remain the best thing about the whole show.)

Some things I’m looking forward to this month: taking Baby Dog to Niagara Falls, I really want to try the vodka chicken parm from Compton’s in Astoria, excited to spend some time with my brother + family visiting from Scotland and there are so many birthday cakes I get to make for other people this month.

If you’ve got any interest in reading last month’s roundup, you can read what went on in January over here and you can see more posts like this on my latest newsletter.
