Winter Wednesdays Vol. 3

by Liz Heather in Winter Wednesdays

Baby Dog, January 2024

Baby Dog, January 2024

BAKING/COOKING

This chocolate brownie cake for Maya’s 13th birthday.

CRAVING

Chocolate covered toffee. But, like, from a farm shop.

EATING

Chicken marsala on repeat.

EXPERIENCING

Shoveling snow off the driveway, which might be the greatest chore of all time? It’s just so quiet and perfect.

LOVING

Palmer’s Cocoa Butter cream. My hands are in hell at my parent’s house with how dry it is and this stuff helps a ton.

SHOPPING

Love these purse hooks I got for my mom’s car.

WATCHING

Rewatched Speed and it really holds up well. Such a great movie. I may or may not have borrowed all of Keanu Reeves’ movies from the library.

WEARING

Essie’s ‘all things ooo’ - love a pastel in the winter.

You can see last week’s Winter Wednesdays Volume 2 over here.

Winter Wednesdays Vol. 1

by Liz Heather in Winter Wednesdays

C’mon!

C’mon!

The beginning of Winter Wednesdays! Did you ask for it? No? Are you getting it? Yes!

BAKING/COOKING

On New Year’s Day, I made this pork tenderloin with a honey garlic sauce that was actually pretty good for a last minute recipe.

CRAVING

Snow. I need it. It’s been so windy and rainy in New York this week that I’m counting down the days that I’ll hopefully see a snowstorm in Ontario this weekend.

EATING

Went to the restaurant Torrisi (by the Carbone people) and it was overrated. I think 2024 is the year that I stop going to trendy places. There’s rarely any substance. We tried the zeppole ham appetizer (which was really good), the lunch sandwich (the bread was phenomenal, but the meat was too fatty), two pastas that were only okay and a great tiramisu dessert. Is that worth the $100 per person it was? Heavens no.

Pasta at Torrisi, NYC

EXPERIENCING

I saw the new fashion exhibit Women Dressing Women at The Met, so I’ll do a full post on it this weekend.

LOVING

The thinnest, greatest pizza I’ve had in years at Emmett’s on Grove (we ordered the Hot Girl and added pineapple to it). And is it just me or are cutesy menu names embarrassing? Always make me cringe.

SHOPPING

Trying to find these love stamps at the post offices near me and they are annoyingly sold old everywhere.

WATCHING

I saw the movie Air last night and it was good. It easily could’ve been cut thirty minutes, sure. And not to be harsh, but it did just feel like a two hour Wikipedia page entry.

WEARING

My new Top Shop coat. I waited until the Nordstrom sale when it was $85 and now she’s all mine.

Winter List 2022 Revisited

by Liz Heather in Personal

Snow on trees might be the answer to everything, March 2023

Snow on trees might be the answer to everything, March 2023

It really feels like I made this winter list about a year ago. Here’s how it went!

1. Take at least five bubble baths.

  • C’mon, I’m not an amateur. Of course I did this one.

2. Finally get my own ice skates and skate around this beautiful rink.

  • Bought skates! I couldn’t get to that gorgeous rink in Huntsville, but I did manage to skate on this wonderful figure-eight rink in Etobicoke.

3. Go skiing.

  • Sadly, no. But this is top priority this year.

4. Make lasagna soup.

  • Made! Ate! Loved!

Lasagna Soup - looks horrifying, tastes heavenly

5. See at least two Broadway plays.

  • Death of a Salesman, Moulin Rouge and Shucked!

February Feats 2023

by Liz Heather in Best of NYC, Family, Food, Links, Movies, Personal, Products, Recipes, Travel

Backyard snow, February 2023

Forgive the lateness, it will absolutely happen again. Here’s what went down last month!

  • The best tweets of February can be found over here. And my favourite Valentine’s Day ones can be found here.

  • Okay, so two biggest things: Nathan did his second Tonight Show and his special GOT REVIEWED IN THE NEW YORK TIMES.

A post shared by Liz Heather (@lizheather)

  • The French baguette candle from Bath & Body Works? Whoa. I hate how much I love it.

  • Could not be more in love with this black sweater.

  • Had dinner at The Bar Room and the grilled chicken on top of their caesar salad was unparalleled. Another thing I love doing when I’m eating in midtown is going to JG Melon afterward for coffee or dessert. It’s the only move.

  • Speaking of good moves, have you ever sat out on a patio just as the weather’s starting to change and ordered a Peroni? Just one, for the whole afternoon? Might be the answer to everything.

  • I had a blister on my heel and these Band-Aid Hydro-Seal bandages worked perfectly.

  • I got drinks at Nubeluz by Jose Andres at The Ritz-Carlton and it was so lovely. The service is great, the views are wild and the drinks and food were perfect. The only thing that made no sense was the waitress/hostess uniforms, but I’m picky as hell??

View from Nubeluz, NYC

Love when places care about wallpaper, at Nubeluz

  • I tried two products from Hero since I love their blemish patches - the lightening pads and the brightening stick and both were shit. Returned.

  • I made these Greek chicken meatballs and they were so bland, so I think I’ll stick with that sweet and spicy recipe I love.

  • I ate at Golden Unicorn in Chinatown and it was really nothing special. I did love the atmosphere, it was very 90s banquet hall-y. But the food was wildly underwhelming.

Pigs at Golden Unicorn, NYC

Chinatown, NYC

  • Also ate at Olio E Piu and wow was that bad. It was just insanely loud, had way too many 22 year olds with flashes going off, and the dessert was hard as a rock. Never again. Hate getting burned like this.

  • Went to The Guggenheim to see the Nick Cave exhibit and yes it was good/fine, but my dumbass thought it was the other Nick Cave. So that’s on me. I guess I’ll just always be disappointed by the exhibits here until they decide to make use of their central space again like they used to do years ago.

The Guggenheim, February 2023

The Guggenheim, February 2023

  • Some things I watched:

    • The Player: this started out as one of the coolest movies I’ve seen in such a long time (especially the opening twenty minutes) and then as it went on turned into one of the worst? That rarely happens, so that was confusing.

    • Pamela, A Love Story: so great. One thing I especially love about her? At the first sign of abuse in any of her relationships, she’s out the door. You don’t hear that a lot and it makes me love her even more. God, it’s still infuriating that Hulu made that series without her permission.

    • Split: okay, I may be the only person with this opinion (HOW?!). but holy hell did I hate this movie. It should be studied how polarizing M. Night Shyamalan can be. I have absolutely loved some of his movies and I have wanted to vomit at others. How can this be possible? I don’t understand it.

  • I had this stupid little reaction video blow up on Instagram, which is wild. Stay out of the comments though, it’s crazy in there.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Liz Heather (@lizheather)

  • I was also in Canada for a little bit, so I went skating, ate that perfect caesar at Scaddabush, shoveled driveways and basked in numerous snowstorms.

I took this while laying in the snow and it might be my favourite photo of all time.

Some things I’m looking forward to this month: so many birthday things, it’s almost aggressive.

If you have any interest in reading what went on in January, come on over here.

Winter sunsets, man.

Navigating November 2022

by Liz Heather in Best of NYC, Food, Movies, Personal, Recipes, Television

How we intend to spend the remaining winter nights

  • You can find the best tweets of the month over here and here.

  • TIP: If you don’t pay for a Spotify subscription and you hate ads: just close the app every time an ad starts and then reopen the app and the song will start. How did it take me years to learn this?

  • So for the first time in nine years, Milk Bar didn’t have their Thanksgiving croissant. Criticisms have been declared and letters have been MAILED. If you think I’m kidding, you really don’t know me.

  • I rarely go to bars, but I went to Witching Hour in Brooklyn and I just loved the layout and general vibe. Must remember.

  • I returned to Minetta Tavern and it’s not as great as it used to be! You’re very crammed into each table and the food wasn’t really worth the price anymore. So that’s rough to realize.

Poppies should be worn year round

  • I also went to Don Angie for the first time and the lasagna is as good as they hype it up to be - same with their incredibly photogenic salad. Make sure to skip the veal tartare and the dessert, though.

  • I tried the Thanksgiving dumplings from Mimi Cheng’s and they were just all right, which was a little disappointing. Maybe I’m still in mourning for the Milk Bar croissants.

  • The Starbucks seasonal drinks keep making me sick and I keep returning for more. Someone explain?

  • Obsessed with this slip I got from Free People.

  • Made a batch of the insanely good Alison Roman chocolate chip shortbread cookies for the freezer, to make closer to Christmas.

  • So there was a beautiful, summer-y day in early November so I found an outdoor pool and headed to The Rockaway Hotel. Day passes for their heated pool are $30 all season, which is kind of amazing.

The Rockaway Hotel Pool, November 2022

Tanning in November

  • Some links I loved:

    • This great Times piece on all kinds of stuffing.

    • Some good cookie-making tips from Ina.

    • I had no idea Coney Island used to have these grand, gorgeous hotels.

    • How to donate stuff straight from home.

  • I got a drink at Miracle on 9th Street which was very cute and the drinks were great. If I’d known it was all the way over near Avenue C, I might not have gone but I’m glad I did.

Drinks at Miracle on 9th Street, Manhattan

  • Some things I watched:

    • Terrifier: okay I shouldn’t really count this since I saw a total of fifteen minutes before leaving the room. But Nathan continued watching it, so I could hear all the screams and sounds from the bedroom and I still somehow had nightmares?? So no I won’t be watching the sequel.

    • We saw Halloween Ends on November 1st and it has to be the absolute worst Halloween of the entire franchise. Just unreal. It felt like punishment for trying to watch a horror movie past October 31st, so lesson learned.

    • The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror XXXIII: it’s a bit depressing to hear how old Marge’s voice has become (this is an awful thought to voice and I apologize), but the Halloween episode was so good this year (especially the last segment).

    • Falling For Christmas: I am not a Hallmark movie person, but I was bored so I put this on and… I’m still firmly not a Hallmark person. These types of movies aren’t even enjoyably bad, I don’t get it.

    • A Christmas Story: this was never in my favourites of Christmas movies and it’s a very okay movie. Hundreds of better Christmas movies, though.

    • Knives Out: it was completely all right, nothing fantastic. I really hated Daniel Craig’s accent and the whole throwing-up-if-lying detail. Just seemed like a bad first screenplay idea.

    • The Fabelmans: it was good but not as epic as I’d hoped. It was really good at showing the memorable relationships through a child’s eye, especially when a kid starts to see his parents as real people.

    • The Crown (seasons 1-2): Love it, can’t wait to keep going. John Lithgow is wonderful. Loved this line: “I find, in general, people have very little understanding of who they are. One has to turn a blind eye to so much of oneself in order to get through life.”

    • Don’t ask me why but I watched some of the last season of The Big Bang Theory and just UGH. What a terrible show that was. The fact that the writers made Penny pregnant in the series finale even though there were countless episodes beforehand where she confidently said she wasn’t going to have children. JUST UGH. Of course it was written by a man.

  • I’ve already gone a few times, but the Union Square Holiday Market is really great this year.

  • You’re already Christmas shopping so just a gentle reminder: get the gift receipt.

  • The snow is coming and you will slip and possibly fall. Act accordingly.

  • I used to absolutely love Yogi Bear’s All Star Christmas Caper (it came out in 1982) and it absolutely still holds up. Link over here if you have kids and/or love nostalgia.

Some things I’m looking forward to this month: of course I’ll be lighting my bayberry candles on Christmas Eve as well as New Year’s Eve, December is always the most expensive month but it doesn’t have to be, don’t forget to buy your mistletoe, I’ll definitely watch some of these, I’ll absolutely watch The Snowman yet again, I’ll make a family Christmas video again, if you’re in Ontario you kind of have to ice skate on this gorgeous path, and once again I’m begging you not to give lottery tickets as gifts.

If you have any interest in reading what went on in October, come on over here.

December Dalliances 2020

by Liz Heather in Beauty, Best of NYC, Drinks, Family, Food, Links, Movies, Personal, Products, Recipes, Reviews

I hope you had the most merry Christmas possible, I really do. Mine was definitely different from our family’s norm, but it still turned out to be intimate and special. I never thought I’d get a Christmas with my parents and Nathan and Baby Dog all together at once, so that’s kind of a wish come true. In such an awful year, it felt so nice to get something so unexpectedly perfect. A part of it felt empty without Gary and Robbie, but if this year has taught me anything it’s to appreciate what you’re lucky enough to have right infront of you.

In other news, are you impressed with how on-time this end-of-month list is this month? I hope you are. I live to impress you. Here’s what went down in December:

  • I recapped how my autumn list went.

  • I made my winter list of things to do for the season because I physically can’t stop making lists. It gives my life a sense of direction.

  • Instagram took away the option to embed your own photos (or changed it & I CAN’T FIGURE OUT HOW TO DO IT), so if you know how to please please god tell me.

  • Great idea of the day: if you have a moment, you can send a letter to become a penpal with a senior citizen who loves to correspond.

  • I’m always a sucker for articles like this at the end of the year.

  • When I was making the Nutella cookies for Christmastime this year, I finally learned how to successfully brown butter! It really helps to use a white-bottomed pan so that you can see the browning process happen.

  • We did the Polar Drive by the airport and it was very cute. Would’ve been perfect for kids.

  • I watched the first episode of the new Saved By The Bell and it was cringe city USA. Just really horrendous. There were oddly maybe two parts that were really funny, so the whole experience was just confusing.

  • Just learned about the existence of mod podge and crafting will never be the same again.

  • Someone on the Food Network suggested mixing ricotta and cheddar for something and I can’t get it out of my head, I never would’ve put those cheeses together but now it’s all that I want to try.

  • Such a good waxing experience at Waxon. The wax they use is like magic, it hurts so much less than at regular waxing places.

  • I have been washing Baby Dog’s face like this almost every night since I saw this video and she loves it.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Memes • Comedy • Culture (@memezar)

  • It’s the first time I’ve used it, but I’ve fallen in love with Isle of Paradise’s Self Tanning Drops.

  • Some movies I rewatched: The Craft (god, I love the outfits in this movie), Misery (great winter watch, still makes me sick to watch the feet scene), Reindeer Games (again, just a fun winter movie) and Alive (are you seeing a theme here? Love snowy movies without Christmas overtones).

  • I watched the Love Fraud documentary series and it was really, really good. Especially because in the last episode you get to hear from the main guy its based around.

  • I have been using the cranberry salve from Kiehl’s and it’s such a Christmas-y, great flavour.

  • Good god do I want this shirt. It’s so workman-chic.

  • In love with this white teeny tank I just bought. I have this fantasy of wearing it braless in the streets when we’re all vaccinated. Not sure if this will happen, but in my mind? Christ, it’s hot.

  • I made this cranberry-rosemary julep and yikes it was strong, but not delicious strong. Giada isn’t great at drinks, she should just stick to over-pronouncing Italian pastas and cheeses.

  • I reeeeally wanted this tulle bra from Zara but it sold out before I could get it, so I bought this blush lingerie one instead. I can almost guarantee that when I put it on Nathan will tell me to calm down.

  • Love love LOVING these Aritzia bodysuits.

  • Bought my first crossbody bag from Zara. Worried about how it’ll fit across tits, but we shall see and I will report back.

Please let it snow when I’m lowered into the ground (is this too dark? Even if I mean it?)

  • Currently living in this Zara sweatshirt.

  • Almost all of these leftover stuffing ideas are pure genius.

  • I’m not a terribly original person, so I’ll forever love a life hack. Love this list.

  • I’ve been using this great hair finish every day for a month because it’s been laying around my parent’s house, but I can’t find it available anywhere online.

  • I made this cranberry brie pistachio wreath that was so, so good (even if you hate brie, which I do).

  • I made these hot chocolate lace cookies that were very good, if not a little too sugary.

I love this time of year

  • In love with these leftover stuffing muffins. As long as you add pancetta to the stuffing.

  • I can’t stop making this kale caesar salad with sweet potato and chickpeas. The dressing is unreal.

  • I dedicated an entire post to the magic that is stuffing.

  • I listed my very favourites from the year.

  • Best tweets of the month ahead.

The uncomfortable feeling I get when everyone watches me unwrap a gift makes me totally understand why the dog takes his treats into the other room

This is Savage. Whenever his legs are struggling in the snow, he simply activates his ears. 14/10 pic.twitter.com/T8lQDH5JtO

Vaccine companies need to team up with fast food companies because NOBODY has EVER questioned what's in a nugget/burger/spicy chicken sandwich from a building with a clown mascot or a paper crown

Some things that I’m looking forward to this month: all of the snow that’s coming, I’m excited to sit down and listen to Taylor Swift’s evermore album, I still want to watch the newest season of Big Mouth, I’m so f-ing pumped for the return of Riverdale, might bite the bullet and buy this Glossier lip gloss that’s apparently NOT sticky (how is that even possible?), I really want to watch Soul, I can’t wait to make this carbonara on New Year’s Day and I’ll definitely do everything on this list for January 1st. Also, if you’re reading this on New Year’s Eve, then get your ass over here.

If you’ve got any interest in reading last month’s roundup, you can see what went down in November over here.

Winter List 2020

by Liz Heather in Personal

Remember when winter was here last and we were on full lockdown? And… here we are again? Maybe I shouldn’t have reminded you of that fact. But that being said, this winter list will be the most low maintenance list I’ve probably ever done because, well, that’s the law.

  1. Build at least one snowman or snow-woman.

  2. Arrange a decadent charcuterie board on New Year’s Eve.

  3. If the city permits it, go ice skating.

  4. Find a hill & sled down that hill.

  5. Use up all of my winter stationary by sending out as much mail as my pen will allow me.

Wherever you are, I hope you’re staying warm and staying safe.
