Winter List Revisited

by Liz Heather in Personal

I almost can’t believe that winter is over, it’s usually so slow and long but since all of 2020 felt that way, maybe this makes sense. In retrospect it’s very cute that I even made a winter list of things to do when everything was in lockdown where I was. Here’s how that went.

  1. Build at least one snowman or snow-woman.

    • This one I should’ve been able to do, no problem. But the kids weren’t allowed to come over and I only managed to get my mom to go outside with me once during the endless stream of snowstorms. Have you ever built a snowman alone? I didn’t think so. I’ve not hit that level of depression yet, so let’s just say that this one couldn’t happen.

  2. Arrange a decadent charcuterie board on New Year’s Eve.

    • I did and it was beautiful. Cranberry goat cheese is one thing I have to make sure to always get over the holidays now, I’m always looking for more cranberry incorporated things. Such an underused berry.

  3. If the city permits it, go ice skating.

    • The city did not permit it, so I did not.

  4. Find a hill & sled down that hill.

    • Again, sledding alone with oneself is a bridge that I cannot yet cross.

  5. Use up all of my winter stationary by sending out as much mail as my pen will allow me.

    • To the best of my ability, this was completed! Writing will always save me.

2/5… yikes.

Spring list coming this week!

Scandinave Spa

by Liz Heather in Reviews, Travel

Have you heard of this place? It's a few hours outside of Toronto and completely worth the trek. It's ridiculous that it only costs $50 to spend the day here.

There are outdoor heated pools, a cold plunge pool, relaxation rooms, a sauna and a eucalyptus steam room that you can venture into throughout the day. I've only gone during the day (it's best to show up as soon as they open since you might get wait-listed if you show up mid-day), but I can only imagine how gorgeous this place would be at night.

One tip? They have a man who walks around and tells you to quiet down if you're too noisy so keep that in mind. (He says it in a really nice way, though, so it's not too embarrassing.)

They offer massages that you can book in advance as well. I opted not to have one since, well, massages are awful and last way too long (why can't I just pay, like,  $10 for a five minute massage? That's all anyone needs.), but I've heard the ones here are pretty good.

That photo above was taken at the end of the day - can you tell how relaxed I am? No? Well, I think I always look relaxed so it's hard to gauge the varying relaxed-like features, so let me assure you that I was.

You should definitely check it out the next time you're near Blue Mountain. Thanks for introducing me to this place, Marla!

The Holiday Train Show at The New York Botanical Garden

by Liz Heather in Best of NYC, Events

Heaven exists.

I finally went to see the holiday train show - and once you get past the long lines, screaming children and Metro North ride, it actually makes for a great day. Here's a video of what it looks like once you're inside

One tip? Skip the NYBG tram ride. It's kind of funny that they even offer tram rides in December since everything is in a full-on state of UNbloom. It's probably a gorgeous ride in the nicer months, but take my word for it and skip it if you're there for the train show. Oh! And an even better tip? Call in advance for tickets. Otherwise you'll get there and you'll have to wait around for a few hours, hence the brisk tram ride undertaking.

Everything designed in the train exhibit is breathtaking. The detail and effort that went into it all is insane and if you've ever had any kind of interest in miniatures, you will love this place to pieces. And the trains, my God the trains! I've often said that if I were to ever have a child, then I would do everything in my power to make his/her room just like Casper's (in the movie Casper, with Christina Ricci). Remember how at the top of the wall in that room, there was an elevated train track, with a train that traveled around the perimeter of the whole room? That. I want that. Such a great idea for a kid's room.

Anyhow, this was definitely worth the trip to the Bronx. Go, damnit!

The exhibit runs until January 16th, 2023. You can purchase tickets here.
