Fury of the Day - Mannequin Lies

by Liz Heather in ,

One of most irritating things about living in this society? Constantly being lied to. Now that's kind of a broad statement, but if I may narrow in just a bit on what I mean, let me proceed.

So what's my problem?

THIS.

What do I mean? That bunched-up material that gets pinned up at the back of a shirt or dress on a mannequin? Yeah, that. That's fucking fraud. That shirt or dress does NOT look the way that you're trying to tell me it does. Therefore, I hate you, store. And I always will. Why does this act have to be done? Why can't you just be real with me? Does the dress look that bad if you DON'T do this maneuver? Can I merely request that you PUT THE FUCKING SHIRT ON THE GODDAM LIFELESS BODY AND MOVE ON TO YOUR NEXT TASK, sales employee? Don't try and fucking trick me into thinking this is how it's gonna look on my body. I'm a human woman. And I don't bunch up my shirt at the back like that, you know this about me and yet you don't seem to care.

And also, if the material of any given dress or shirt doesn't hug a body in the way that you're FORCING it to, have you considered that maybe some people are actually looking for something that doesn't accentuate every part of a body? Maybe some women WANT a dress that just rests on their frame and doesn't showcase every curve and nuance of the female form. Is that a shocking want? Do you not understand why someone might LIKE a dress that maybe doesn't fucking force you to showcase how tiny your waist is?

Honestly, I don't see this a lot anymore, but it definitely occurs more than it should. It happens to be rampant at The Gap and most department stores. And when I do see it, I lose my mind for a minute. Makes me so fucking mad.

If you're thinking I'm too angry about this... ugh. Stop reading my blog! This is not meant to be angry, it is merely said with passion. I could go on to say how small things like this are part of a larger problem, but I will leave it at that.

Hair Dryer Stand

by Liz Heather in ,

When I was in middle school, I would get my hair blow-dried out at salons WAY more than I should have for a thirteen year old girl. Why did I do this? Other than the obvious reason of being spoiled beyond belief, I just didn't know how to do my own hair as nicely as salons can do it. I still don't know how that happens, really. But sometimes I can fake it all right, I think.

She should look way more excited with what's happening, in my opinion.

She should look way more excited with what's happening, in my opinion.

I just saw this stand in my daily internet perusing and I have to say that I'm extremely curious to see if it's any good. I've always felt that at least three hands are needed when coiffing a 'do. And with this guy? That can practically be a reality. Only $14. Can be bought here.

Tip of the Day - Eye Makeup

by Liz Heather in ,

Instead of using concealer only underneath your eyes, use it on top of your eyelids as well. Why the hell would you do this? I'll tell you why.

  1. It keeps your whole eye area (under and above) the same colour and keeps it all the same kind of smooth.
  2. It acts as a primer and lets your eye shadow stay on way longer.
  3. It brightens up your eyelid area so that if you do wear any eye shadow, it'll stand out even more.

I just learned to do this recently and have noticed a difference. Subtle difference, but a difference. Also, it really does help your makeup stay on longer. That's the main reason I do it. Well, that reason and the fact that I don't use eye shadow primers. (I totally would, but they're too expensive usually.)

Mako Hair Architects & Spa - Brampton, ON

by Liz Heather in ,

Let me start this by saying that I am not very loyal to any hairdresser. I like to shop around, and I get my hair cut maybe once every two years so it isn't a high priority for me since I've had the same hairstyle since grade three. Let us casually move past how abnormal that fact is, though, yes?

When I do force myself to get a trim, it's always too expensive. That's why I tend to go for Groupon hair deals instead. And this was the first actually amazing Groupon experience I've had. (Why were past Groupon deals bad? I don't know, just added on fees, a lot of attitudes when I present my coupon, silent judgement, etc.) I feel like I'm almost definitely going to make this place my go-to salon now. Why?

  • Every single woman in there was RIDICULOUSLY nice and talkative, but not in that boring "How's the weather? What do you do?" type way. That's probably what I loved most. Most hair places are all about chit chat, and that's fine if you're into that, but usually I find it boring, awkward and nobody's really that interested in anything the other is saying. Am I alone in thinking this?
  • The hair stylist I had trimmed it exactly the way I wanted, WHICH IS RARE. Most of the ones I've had in the past do whatever they think would look good and it's usually always garbage.
  • Somehow we started talking about some of the superstitions that my mom has passed on to me and she had totally heard of some of them before and GAVE ME MORE NEW ONES! So, obviously, lot of love for that.
  • They also do coffee readings. And I think you already know that I'd be really into that.

Just such a good experience. Definitely go here if you're looking for a new place that's actually good. It's near Main Street and Queen Street in Brampton. Also, the Groupon is still available here

Bright Nail Polish

by Liz Heather in ,

I'm not a religious woman. I do, however, have very strong beliefs and convictions. One of these core beliefs? Fluorescent nail polish.

Does that make me sound dumb? 'Cause it shouldn't. This is a blog where I write about stuff I use and love, so you really should've seen that coming.

I'm writing about this love now especially because the crisp autumn air has arrived. And one of the things that enrages me about this time of year? When women abandon their bright summer hues and replace them with the dreary dark or pastel colours that every fashion magazine will tell you is gorgeous this season. Why is this the norm? I have no idea. It happens every year. I guess because summer's over, you're not allowed to have any more fun? Honestly, if ever there is a time to be cheered up by beautifully striking nails - that time is now. Or better yet, the dead of winter. These are the times we need to see these beauties to wake us up! (And a tip for all humans? Unless you're a 14 year old boy or girl entering his/her testy phase, black nail polish should always be avoided. You're better than that, everyone. C'mon.)

That colour up top is called Hot Tub and it's available at Urban Outfitters for $5 (or two for $8). That is usually my go-to colour because it's as bright as all hell. They've got other great ones too, such as Ringo (bright yellow) and Tiny Shorts (bright orange). (Sidenote: I love the names of nail polishes. My dream job is to be the person who comes up with them. The best one I've ever heard was called, "I'm Not Really Just A Waitress" - Ugh. LOVE.) They also have a bright blue, but personally I find any kind of blue immensely unattractive on toenails (because it looks like ten different hammers fell on all your toes and you're recuperating... ie. gross).

I'm not even advising you to wear these kinds of colours all the time. At least once in awhile, though. I like to do it almost all the time because I crave attention. And when you're wearing this kind of hue? People talk to you a lot. Good people! Some not great people, but mostly good! And honestly, it just cheers me up to look down and see these guys on terrible, cold days. For sure that's a dumb thing to say, but I'm probably happier than you are... so I'm comfortable with that.
