Dinner at Blue Hill at Stone Barns

by Liz Heather in Best of NYC, Food, Reviews

I've often tried to explain to you how lucky I am. I don't know what happened in a past life, but this one continues to treat me tremendously. The dinner that I had at Blue Hill at Stone Barns was the most elegant and (at twenty-plus courses, we stopped counting) definitely the most luxurious meal I've ever experienced. In a word? Epic.

How could I afford a farm-to-table restaurant like this? How could I even hear of such a magical spot nestled forty-five minutes outside of New York City? Who on earth would treat me to this decadent night of gluttonous desire? The one and only Paul. A man who repeatedly takes birthday celebrations to another level. There will never be an appropriate way to thank him, so I'll just have to outdo him come October 20th.

I was not at all joking when I mentioned that there were over twenty courses. We didn't even get bread until course nine! The plates began very modestly and tiny, then continued to grow and grow with no end in sight. I'll never know how we ate what we did that night. It's still sort of a haze. Here's one example of the beauty that we devoured.

When you arrive, you let your server know if you have any allergies and off you go. This place is not a restaurant, this place is an adventure. The menu changes with the seasons and whatever is at its peak in the season will be dominantly featured in the majority of the courses. We went in mid March, so we got beets. I know what you're thinking because at the time I thought it, too. But this night turned me into a lover of beets. It still feels weird to even say that. I don't know how to tell you how incredible everything tasted. I really wish I knew the words that would express how fresh and alive each course felt. It felt like hours of work went into each ingredient. God, the venison? Fuck. Never in your life are you gonna taste meat the way they cooked it here.

We even got taken into the kitchen to have a course at a table set up in there, which made me feel like a judge on Chopped (ie. better than you). There were over thirty people doing a billion things in there and it was neat as hell to see how a place like this could be run.

At the end of the night when the waiter came to our table with a birthday candle in a piece of cake, they had another waiter walk infront of him (blocking him) all the way to the table so that the candle wouldn't be visible. Is it just me or is that classy as hell?

Whenever I try to explain this night to anyone, I make sure that 50% of what I say will describe how amazing the food was - and the other 50% is devoted to the GORGEOUSNESS of the presentation of it all. I swear we probably saw one actual plate the entire night - food was instead served on slabs of heated rock, in eggshells, hanging from plants. I can't even begin to describe the dessert FOREST that was the finale. Does it sound like I'm making this up? It should, because these details are ridiculous AND WONDERFUL. I wish I would have taken more photos, but we were too busy enjoying it all.

I can only describe the experience as holy. Am I trying to say that my friend Paul is God-like? I guess I am. He's the most generous person I know and I'll never forget this night as long as I live.

Thank/love you, Paul

Nutella Bar in NYC

by Liz Heather in Best of NYC, Food

Unlike many of my friends, I was introduced to Nutella very late in life, about two years ago. I would see it in grocery stores, but I always assumed it was some form of peanut butter, which I've never really cared for either. I've always loved Ferrero Rocher's, but I didn't know that hazelnut was a factor in that chocolate at all. I thought that flavour was unique to only Ferrero Rochers, like a real dummy. Anyway, eventually I figured out that it was the hazelnut that made it good and sought out all things hazelnut. Like gelato. If you've never said yes to a hazelnut gelato, I don't know what you're doing with your life.

Anyway, with cheese bars and biscuit huts in existence in this city, it makes sense that a place like this should exist as well. It opens in Eataly (200 Fifth Avenue) this Monday and I'll assume you can expect long lines. You can read their menu online here.

REMINDER: Don't forget that tickets for the Seinfeld Cyclones game at Coney Island go on sale tomorrow at 10am. You can purchase tickets over here.

Five New Soft-Serve Flavors at Momofuku Milk Bar

by Liz Heather in Best of NYC, Food

Today is May 1, which means that Pastry Chef Christina Tosi (of Momofuku fame) rolled out new menus at all Momofuku Milk Bar locations. In addition to the return of new cake truffles (which are birthday cake, german chocolate jimbo cake and strawberry lemon cake), there happen to be five new soft-serve flavours.

In the East Village, it's cranberry limeade; yuzu citrus verbena is in the machines at the Chambers Hotel in midtown; the Carroll Gardens location has got Mandarin-orange creamsicle ice cream; the Upper West Side has a riff on fruit cocktail with peaches, pears, grapes, cherry, and more. Finally, the Williamsburg Milk Bar has huckleberry cheesecake, made with fruit compote and graham-cracker crumbs, which is the only one of the lot that can be served as a swirl. All flavors are available now through July 31.

If you don't find this news worthy information, I'm sorry that you had a rough childhood.

Brooklyn Cyclones Hosting A Seinfeld Night on July 5th

by Liz Heather in Best of NYC, Events, Television

Why is this happening? 'Cause dreams do come true. I've been wanting to go to a Cyclones game for years, so this couldn't be a more perfect one to go to.

"On July 5, 1989, Seinfeld aired on NBC for the first time and 25 years later, the Cyclones will celebrate the show that has left an indelible mark on popular culture. The first 2,500 fans in attendance will receive a Keith Hernandez "Magic Loogie" Bobblehead.  In addition, there will be non-stop Seinfeld themed entertainment from beginning to end. Yada yada yada... you'll have an awesome night." brooklyncyclones.com

What kinds of things?

  • MCU Park will be known as Vandelay Industries Park for one night only
  • Mailmen in uniform get to throw out a ceremonial first pitch
  • Anyone who has a business card indicating that they are in fact a "Latex Salesman" will also receive a free ticket to the game.  If we call the number and it's some apartment on the Upper East Side, you won't qualify for the freebie.
  • Fans can visit the information table for an "airing of grievances"
  • Closest to the pin / whale's blow hole competition
  • The foul poles will be known as Festivus Poles
  • "Low-Talking" PA Announcer
  • Elaine Dancing Contest
  • Everyone Runs the Bases Post-game (but anyone named Jerry gets a head start)
  • Game of "Risk" on the Concourse
  • Cereal eating contests
  • Anyone named George Costanza will be allowed to join our radio broadcast as a color analyst for an inning
  • Players in puffy shirts for batting practice

You probably should get your tickets early, as this night is surely to be one of the most popular of the 2014 season. Single game tickets will go on sale Saturday, May 10th at 10AM.  But if you follow the Cyclones on Facebook or Twitter, you will get access to a special pre-sale before the general public.  For more information please call 718-37-BKLYN.

Honestly, the "Low-Talking PA Announcer" is maybe the best idea in the world. SO EXCITED FOR THIS.

The Nutella French Doughnut at Ground Central in NYC

by Liz Heather in Best of NYC, Food

What do you think I'm going to tell you - this tastes horrible?! Get the hell out of here. You should know the drill by now. GO EAT THIS DOUGHNUT! Fuck that Cronut line, this is better.

They're available at Ground Central (155 East 52nd Street). They usually sell out at some point during the day, but if you're there before 3pm, you should be all right. Trust me, I know my donuts.

Juliana's

by Liz Heather in Best of NYC, Food

As you know, I've already been to Grimaldi's. How did Juliana's (which is located right next door) compare? Well, bubs - it was EONS better and easily one of the best pizza places in New York.

Small Margherita Pizza with Pepperoni (what we ate)

Why's it so good?

  • The pepperoni is tiny and thick cut (ie. GOOD pepperoni)
  • Service was great and fast as hell
  • Wait time wasn't ludicrous

If you don't know the story behind Juliana's and Grimaldi's, well, it's a long one. But this article sums it up pretty well. And I don't care what the tourist guidebooks tell you, this place is ridiculously better than Grimaldi's next door. Go. Eat.

Necessary Clothing in NYC

by Liz Heather in Best of NYC

Before I begin, let me give you a brief rundown on the history of my clothing store opinions (with specific reasoning in brackets):

Stores I Have Outgrown

  • H&M (The quality has become so shitty over the years. Remember when they started out and we were all so excited at how good it was? Everything was so much better then!)
  • The Gap (Absolutely all of their pants fit weird. And the presence of pastel blazers? RAMPANT.)
  • Forever 21 (I no longer wish to forever be 21.)

Stores I Should Like, But Can't Get On Board With

  • Top Shop (Too expensive and also, nothing seems wearable.)
  • Zara (Too bland and reminds me of a store that hip grandmas should really be into.)
  • Aritzia (Are you kidding with how expensive your dresses are? Man. I get it, it's soft. Softness ain't worth $100+. You used to be decent with your prices, what the hell happened?)

Anyway, if you're a woman who's in New York between the ages of 13 and dead - you should stop by this clothing store, Necessary Clothing. If you have ANY of the same opinions as I do (see above) on any of those stores, then this place might just be what you're looking for. It's crazy affordable, with some especially cheaper items, but alongside some pricier, nicer-quality pieces, too.

There are literally three locations all within two blocks of one another in Soho. Why is this? No idea, man. It's weird. But women seem to love this store, and with good reason. I've been going for years and I love it. You can get stuff from their online store as well.

The Chocolate Chip Cookie at Smile-To-Go in NYC

by Liz Heather in Best of NYC, Food

This is my best friend Harmeet eating one of the best cookies I've had in New York City. Is there such thing as a bad chocolate chip cookie? That remains to be seen. But this one? If you're in the area (Soho), GET ONE. And yes, that's sea salt on top. All the best cookies have sea salt on top.

I've heard that their menu has a lot of other gems as well, but please oh please go eat this guy.

NYC Line Waiting Service

by Liz Heather in Best of NYC

This guy's job is to wait in line for you. Is it just me or is that a brilliant idea? He runs SOLD Inc. (Same Ole Line Dudes) and they charge $25 for the first hour and $10 for each additional half hour on a queue anywhere in New York City. Personally I have all the time in the world to wait in lines at this point in my life, but for others who don't? Such a genius idea. This man is gonna do so well.

You can find out more here.
