Ma!

by Liz Heather in Family, Food

This is a video of my grandmother, Ma, making this Trinidadian candy that she's been making for decades. My mom shot the footage and my brother Gary cut it together - and it's fantastic.

Airbnb Lists Replica Of Van Gogh's 'Bedroom' Painting In Chicago

by Liz Heather in Travel

The Art Institute of Chicago has built a life-size replica of Vincent Van Gogh's famous painting, The Bedroom, in River North, and they're renting it out on the short-term rental website Airbnb.

The Art Institute's exhibit of Van Gogh's Bedrooms runs at the Loop museum from Feb. 14 to May 16, and during that time the museum will apparently be hosting Airbnb users at its Van Gogh bedroom in River North for a mere $10 a night.

"This room will make you feel like you're living in a painting," the listing reads. "It's decorated in a Post-Impressionist style, reminiscent of Southern France and times gone by. Its furniture, bright colors, and artwork will give you the experience of a lifetime." The bedroom, which is designed after a painting of the Dutch post-Impressionist artist's bedroom in Arles, France, sparsely decorated a la Van Gogh's painting with a painted wooden bed-frame, red bedspread, a side table with several water jugs and a couple of chairs. The listing advertises that the "entire home/apartment" is available for up to two guests a night, with one bedroom and one bed, a TV, wifi and kitchen.

Ummm, that's neat as hell. This would be such a fun room to spend a night in.

Plant Nanny

by Liz Heather in Links

“Plant Nanny combines health with fun to remind you to drink water regularly. The cute plant keeps you company every day by living in your phone.”

Does it seem foolish that a grown adult would need hourly reminders to drink more water? To some, maybe. To me? Not at all! I am forever being told that the secret to beautiful skin is drinking your body weight in water each day. (Are men told this too? Or is it just women who are constantly expected to worry that, oh fuck, the wrinkles & fine lines are COMING FOR YOU IF YOU DON'T START PREPARING NOW.)

That being said, I do need to drink more water. Not because I'm deathly afraid of becoming some sort of trollish, water-hating ogre, but because drinking water is so easy to do. It's, like, the easiest possible thing you can do to even be 1% better at taking care of yourself. I mean, it's everywhere and it's free. It's almost ridiculous not to be drinking lots of water at this point.

And the absolute cutest reminder of doing such? This app. You type in your body weight, your level of daily activity - and then it lets you know exactly how much water you should be drinking daily. And for every cup you drink, that water feeds a growing plant. Simple, right? It's honestly cute as hell.

S'mores Pie

by Liz Heather in Food, Recipes

This is probably the easiest dessert you'll ever make in your life. Also, it's probably the best thing you could ever bring to a party.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup softened unsalted butter
  • ½ cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup graham cracker crumbs
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 7 ounces marshmallow fluff
  • 4 whole (1.55 oz bars) Hershey's chocolate bars
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows
  • ¼ cups chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and spray a 9″ pie pan with baking spray.

  2. In a large bowl beat the butter and sugar together until combined, then add egg and vanilla and stir them in. Stir in flour, graham cracker crumbs and baking powder.

  3. Divide the dough in half. Press half the dough in the bottom and up the sides of the prepared pie pan. Evenly spread the marshmallow fluff over the bottom crust. Separate chocolate squares and place on top of the marshmallow fluff. Place 1 cup of marshmallows on top.

  4. Using the remaining crust, pat sections of dough on top of and around all the marshmallows (they will still show through and that is perfect). Sprinkle with 1/4 cup chocolate chips, then bake 20 minutes until lightly browned.

  5. Remove pan from oven and set it on a wire rack. Cool completely before cutting - honestly, you have to wait otherwise it'll be a huge mess. Also, you can make this ahead of time and then put it in the refrigerator overnight and just reheat it before you serve.
