Spring Sundays Vol. 11

by Liz Heather in Spring Sundays

Last day of May! It’s kind of amazing how fast this year is moving.

ADDICTED TO

Using Spot Hero for advance/cheaper parking in Toronto. Unreal, it’s so handy.

BAKING

Attempting this carrot cake that has so many great reviews for my dad’s birthday this week. Kinda want to omit the pineapple, but I hate being one of those people who thinks she knows better than the tried-and-true recipe.

COOKING

I know it’s not summer yet, but I’m itching to make these recipes: corn and farro salad, grilled tomatoes with scallions, chives and ricotta, grilled romaine salad, grilled summer salmon with chimichurri, and veggie burgers with garlic herb mayo.

CRAVING

I’d love to try the Graza potato chips because there’s such a fuss being made about them.

EATING

This phenomenal curried chickpea salad that Marla made. Still thinking about it.

EXPERIENCING

Centre Island in Toronto and I loved it. Next time I want to see more of it, but it’s the best. It feels so similar to how Ontario Place did in the 90s and I can’t believe it can still exist.

LISTENING

This song on a loop:

LOVING

Alison Roman’s 2025 cookbook Something From Nothing. I photocopied at least fifteen recipes, I can’t wait to try them. Snail butter pasta? Genius.

SHOPPING

Secured the baby Vladdy bobblehead and it was completely worth the three hour wait in line.

WATCHING

We saw Passenger and it sucked, but that’s okay because I’m still on a high from Obsession.

WEARING (I WISH)

There’s not a world in which this is worth $250, IS THERE?

WRITING

The best threads and tweets of May can be read here.

You can read last week’s Spring Sundays Volume 10 here.

"It's hard to replicate true love" is way too sweet/sad a thing to say in a post-game interview. Love these guys.

Winter Wednesdays Vol. 5

by Liz Heather in Winter Wednesdays

There was such a huge snowstorm here this past week and it’s pretty great that even now, days later, there’s still a crisp blanket of white snow covering everything. Nothing makes a January more depressing than seeing cold, muddied grass.

BAKING/COOKING

I made an open-faced BLT on gluten free toast at home and think I realized that there actually is such a thing as using too much raw garlic in a recipe. Hate learning things the hard way.

CRAVING

Really want to go to a Raptors game. Gotta get on this.

DRINKING

I haven’t had a really good glass of wine in months, so I think I’m gonna take a break for awhile.

EATING

I laughed at these chips (below) and then found myself bewildered by their taste. The end must be near.

You can read the rest of Winter Wednesdays over here.

Fall Fridays Vol. 5

by Liz Heather in Fall Fridays

Happy Halloween!

BAKING/COOKING

I made this apple cider braised pork tenderloin and it was really good.

CRAVING

Homemade Halloween decorations! So I watched a YouTube tutorial on how to make a lifesized Georgie from It and it turned out pretty great!

DRINKING

I have all this extra apple cider and I don’t know what to do with it, but I really don’t want to drink it. Maybe apple cider coffee cake? Air fried apple fritters? Or maybe I’ll just boil it on the stove so the house smells amazing.

EATING

I made quesadillas with the leftover apple cider pork and yikes was it good. Added sauteed jalapenos and onions to it to oomph it up and it was an incredible lunch.

EXPERIENCING

Took a fall drive with Nathan because Ontario is exploding with colour right now.

LISTENING

To all of the hype around Scream 7. I am IN.

LOVING

We went to the Skydome to see the Blue Jays in a WORLD SERIES GAME and Joe Carter threw the first pitch. How is this real life.

SHOPPING

If you give out candy on Halloween, it should be law to also have a fog machine. Also, the Band-Aids that come with Polysporin on them? Life changing.

WATCHING

I saw the latest Halloween episode of Bob’s Burgers, which was just all right. Have to start the newest season of English Teacher soon.

WEARING

You can read Fall Fridays Volume 4 over here, I’m doing an autumn highlights reel on Instagram and you can see more posts like this on my latest newsletter.

The Best Blue Jays Tweets (World Series Edition)

by Liz Heather in Links

Yes I did a post like this only nine days ago, but the tweets have been on fire so here were the best of the best from the World Series games so far!

This video wasn't wrong; just 19 months ahead of its time. It gave me chills then and gives me them even more so now.pic.twitter.com/39mTQul08T

On the one hand, the Jays were lackluster in game 2.

On the other hand, this homicidal maniac takes the mound for us in game 3. #WANTITALL pic.twitter.com/iEXBdVULNo

Five months ago today, Davis Schneider was in AAA, where he'd been for over a month after an early-season demotion.

The Blue Jays were 26-28 with playoff odds below 30%.

Now he's living the dream, walking around Dodger Stadium barefoot, and the Jays are 3 wins from a title. https://t.co/4Z5ZzdGS3I

Fall Fridays Vol. 4

by Liz Heather in Fall Fridays

BAKING/COOKING

I made this sweet potato kale salad with hot ginger dressing and it was great. I added feta and I’d definitely make it again. Perfect autumn meal.

CRAVING

If I don’t buy these new STAMPS OF DELIVERING STAMPS soon I might explode.

DRINKING

I had a chai latte for the first time and it was so good. I never, ever drink chai tea so I thought for sure that I’d hate it but here we are. I don’t know when I adopted this ideology that I think I know everything, but I absolutely do not. What a miserable trait, I really hope it leaves me entirely someday.

EATING

Forever love a Hillstone salad. That almost-shaved grilled chicken they add to their caesars? Ungodly.

EXPERIENCING

I made a batch of pumpkin coffee syrup and I think one of the best feelings in the world is sitting on my couch on a Sunday morning, drinking an iced pumpkin coffee in front of my Halloween village. I DON’T ASK FOR MUCH.

This Halloween village + me against the world

LISTENING

Officially a week until the 31st, so my Halloween playlist has started playing.

LOVING

All things baseball. The great tweets. The Tim Hortons Blue Jays cups!!

SHOPPING

I just bought these brass spiderweb coasters because 1) they look like they’ll last years, 2) I deserve to have nice things and 3) the world is burning but I still don’t want cup rings on my coffee table.

WATCHING

Old CSI episodes. It’s been so long since I’ve seen this show that I don’t remember any of the plot lines, so it’s like watching it for the first time again. Love Grissom.

WEARING

My new ivory Blue Jays crew sweater from Peace Collective. Deeply considering these shorts, too (below).

For too long, Blue Jays’ fans have waited to cheer for a team that plays baseball “the right way”. Not much to ask, but, funny thing, that can lead to a winning record, a playoff spot, a league pennant, and maybe even a World Series title. We’ll see. The wait has ended in 2025.

Fall Fridays Vol. 2

by Liz Heather in Fall Fridays

BAKING/COOKING

I made the Milk Bar pumpkin salted caramel pie and it turned out wonderfully! Incredible rich, but good. Also made this easy bacon pasta that was more than satisfying.

CRAVING

All things cranberry. The best homemade cranberry sauce of all time: a cup of white sugar, a cup of apple juice, a bag of fresh cranberries and the zest of an orange.

DRINKING

This oat maple brown sugar creamer is great in iced coffee.

EATING

We did Thanksgiving a week early, so leftover sandwiches were back and better than ever.

EXPERIENCING

The joys of October. Weather has finally shifted to chilly, the leaves are on their way out and the pumpkins have been bought. Look at this incredible soap my friend bought me!

LISTENING

SHOPPING

I have my eyes on so many things: this NYPL ornament, this too-expensive Aritzia sweater in brown, this Roots vest in hazelnut brown and these mouse ornaments. And I know I don’t need another pair of brown boots, but these are gorgeous.

WATCHING

I saw the first couple of Paranormal Activities for the first time and they were pretty fun. Also watched the Summerween episode of Gravity Falls with the kids and it was unexpectedly great!

The Best of August

by Liz Heather in Beauty, Family, Food, Links, Movies, Personal, Products, Recipes, Television, Travel

Summer is almost over and I think this is the first time in years that I’ve been a little sad to see it go. I was able to visit Scotland with my family, Marla came to see me in New York, I spent the majority of August in Ontario with friends and the kids, we played so much of Wii’s Warioware: Smooth Moves, I’m maintaining the tan of my dreams and I’ve never eaten so much fresh corn in my life. What kind of summer-loving fiend have I become?? In any case, here’s what went down in August.

I finished my Summer Saturdays series that I loved doing. I’ll definitely do this again (maybe sooner than you think).
The best tweets of August can be found over here.
Loving the new Urban Outfitters Cherry ICEEEE nail polish.

The coolest job of life would be to come up with nail polish names

Obsessed with making this heirloom tomato toast as long as it’s in season.
Made these stuffed summer shells that I’d definitely make again. Summer pasta is underrated.

Went to a Blue Jays game with my brother Robbie and some of his kids and it was so great.

I need to bite the bullet and just buy the Lemax pumpkin patch train, right?
Maple syrup greek yogurt? I never knew how much I needed you.
Also made cake pops for the first time with my niece Maya and they turned out perfect. Halloween cake pops up next.
At my parent’s house, I found myself constantly making pizza (with store-bought dough) and it’s so much better than I remember homemade pizza being. Maybe it’s because you need to heat the spread-out dough (on parchment, with olive oil rubbed on top) for ten minutes at 450 degrees and THEN put all the sauce/toppings/cheese on it and put it back in for another ten minutes at 500 degrees.

If you’re anywhere near Woodstock, Ontario then you need to get these incredibly squeaky cheese curds.
Went to the Humber Bay Shores Farmers Market and got this great honey soda.

My greatest discovery this summer? Sponge toffee is ungodly perfect. NO ONE TOLD ME.
In my shopping cart:
- These gorgeous creamy nude polish collection.
- Snow globe Christmas stamps from the USPS.
- Warm Apple Pie candle at Bath & Body Works
- Witches dancing in the moonlight from Lemax (okay, I legit might have a problem)

I’m in love with the Silk Creamy Maple Almond milk flavour for iced coffee.
My dad got a letter from King Charles for his 100th birthday, which is a big deal whether you care about the royals or not. And since his coronation was in the middle of May and my dad’s birthday was the first week of June, there’s a very good chance that this was the very first 100th birthday letter signed by THE KING OF ENGLAND, which is absolutely the neatest thing on the planet.

Dad’s 100th Birthday letter from King Charles

I went to the CNE with my mom and it was lovely. Tried the footlong freak fries that were texturally amazing. I was intrigued by the street corn soft serve but was unwilling to spend over $5 for it. And nobody should pay over $20 for a pina colada in a pineapple so we made them at home instead.

I tried the Benefit brow pencil (because I was temporarily out of the Colourpop one I love) and it was absolute trash. Returned it immediately.
Also flew in a Harvard airplane!

Some things I watched:
- Barbie (for the second time): would honestly go a third time if anyone’s into it.
- The Summer I Turned Pretty (season two): I think I loved this season even more than the first. I loved that almost every episode had some fun event that took over the entire episode (the carnival one, the house party one, the motel one, etc.).
- Outer Banks (first two seasons): I can’t explain the grip this show has on me. The disgust-turned-to-love I have for JOHN B confuses even me.
- Simply Irresistible: so laughably awful, I’m surprised Sarah Michelle Gellar got any work after this. The magical crab was the best character.
- M3GAN: first of all, it’s not a horror movie so it’s weird it was sold that way. It’s really not good, but also very fun to watch with kids.
- Who Framed Roger Rabbit: I forced the kids to watch this one because my brothers and I saw it about ten thousand times when we grew up. Heathers love this movie.
- Junior: how did I never see this 90s classic? It should be law to watch one 90s movie each month. They’re so uncomplicated and good.
- The last ten minutes of Beverly Hills Chihuahua: I came home to my niece Tianna watching this with my mom and Baby Dog and I saw literal minutes of it and cried. I can’t see pretend-dead-dogs even when they turn out to not be dead. I’M ONLY HUMAN. (The movie itself seemed actually adorable, maybe.)
- And So It Goes (the Michael Douglas/Diane Keaton movie): ugh! So bad. When you get Rob Reiner to do a job meant for Nora Ephron - you get this piece of shit.
- And Just Like That (season two): are there people out there who don’t see what a train wreck this show is? I want to talk to them. Also, Carrie is not a cat person. Whoever made that choice truly does not understand this character. Since when does Steve speak Italian? Charlotte was the real winner of the season.
- Only Murders In The Building (season three): love how it’s starting out so far, but it’s not really as exciting as the previous seasons.
- Summer Rental: truly the worst John Candy movie of all time.
- Talk To Me: good/original, but too much gross-out horror for me.
Since it’s the first day of school today, I always think of what we should’ve been learning in school instead this time of year.
I got Baby Dog’s teeth cleaned for the first time in her life and it was a phenomenal experience. I was at Pet Valu and saw that they worked with an organization that cleans your dog’s teeth without putting them under anesthesia. The team at KissableK9 Care was beyond impressive and kind and the whole thing took thirty minutes. I have before and after photos that are pure insanity. I would post them here, but like… even a chihuahua likes her privacy sometimes. Cannot recommend KissableK9 enough!
Visited the Applewood outdoor pool in Mississauga a few times and I can’t wait to try their lane swimming next summer.

My babies! (Yes their boyfriends are my babies too I guess…?)

Some things I’m looking forward to this month: putting the final touches on my Halloween costume, creating an autumn list of things to do, taking Nathan to see The Shark Is Broken on Broadway and I really want to eat the tomato salad at Shukette.

If you’ve got any interest in reading last month’s roundup, you can see what went down in July over here. My summer highlights on Instagram can be seen here and you can see more posts like this on my latest newsletter.
