October Occurrences 2024

by Liz Heather in Food, Halloween, Movies, Personal, Recipes

October in Mississauga, Ontario

October in Mississauga, Ontario

I love Octobers but I’m grateful to be moving on to the holiday season. Halloween was so good this year. I used a fog machine (it’ll now have to be a staple each year) and a bluetooth speaker that played horror movie soundtracks and it was. the. best. Here’s what else went on last month.

You might think you’re better than fake tattoos, I assure you that you’re not

  • I made a list of my favourite Halloween tweets.

  • Put up some new Halloween decorations.

We must reward greatness

  • The best tweets of the month can be found here.

  • I made this apple crisp coffee cake, which was fantastic. I’d prefer more crumble than cake, though.

  • I tried the new spicy all dressed chips and it’s a big meh. All dressed is already so perfect, they really should just leave them alone.

  • I got a ton of old VHS and camcorder tapes converted to digital at Digital Treasures and they did such a good job.

  • I’ve been constantly wearing the Anne Marie Beretta coat I got last month at the vintage clothing show.

  • I hadn’t had a DQ cake in years, so I bought one and it remains as good as ever.

  • I don’t love donuts (too doughy), but a holiday themed donut? Obviously I'll get those.

Thanksgiving donuts from Sanremo’s in Etobicoke, Ontario

  • Thanksgiving was really great, if not a little quieter this year. The next-day sandwich was one for the books. (If I started a business that solely made these sandwiches and just tried out new versions each month, could that work? Call it Turkey Time? Patent pending.)

  • Went to Downey’s for their pumpkin donuts (for a donut hater, I buy an alarming amount) and got this apple pie flavoured milk. It was a bit gross, but you have to try new seasonal items. It’s law.

  • Took my parents on an autumn drive through Belfountain and our car broke down in the middle of nowhere! It was exciting.

Where the car broke down

  • I went to Ottawa for the first time! The drive was intensely beautiful. My dumbass didn’t realize how close Quebec was, otherwise I would’ve made sure to get a poutine across the water. Next time.

  • Stopped at The Big Apple on the way back and just wow. I’d never been there before, so I loved it.

  • I bought a few new pairs of bootcut jeans (I know, pretty cool) and had them all tailored. They fit perfectly. I will tailor my pants for the rest of my life now.

  • October sunrises >>

How is this real

  • Some things I watched:

    • Nobody Wants This: other than some really bad dialogue, I’d definitely watch season two.

    • English Teacher: best new show on TV, hands down.

    • Only Murders in the Building: good season, not great. Martin Short will be the main reason I keep watching.

    • The Blair Witch Project: I got my niece Maya to watch it and she loved it. A perfect horror movie.

    • The Return of the Living Dead: okay, it’s obviously bad but fun bad.

    • The Bob’s Burgers Halloween episode this year was awful?? What the hell?

    • I’ve been on a real Twilight Zone binge and this quote, “As long as there are men, there cannot be peace.” PREACH.

Some things I’m looking forward to this month: good god, I don’t even know. The election is today so… let’s just wait and see what happens before I look forward to anything.

September Shenanigans 2024

Early autumn sunsets >>

Early autumn sunsets >>

Welcome to the absolute best time of year.

  • The best tweets of the month can be found over here.

  • I wrote about going to Cooperstown, New York.

  • I compiled my favourite summer photos.

  • I recapped how my summer list went.

  • I made an autumn list of things I’d like to do.

  • The AirTrain at JFK was half price for the entire summer! Am I the only one who finds that crazy? In a city where everything costs more with each passing day. Blown away by that. It’s back to the ridiculous/normal pricing now, but still.

  • I went to my first dog swim event (!) and it was absolutely heaven on earth. At the end of summer, public pools open up their pools on the last swim day of the season to let dogs go swimming and it’s as great as it sounds. (Baby Dog is too delicate to partake, but we watched from a safe distance.)

  • Forever a lover of autumn mums. And $9 for 9” ones at Home Depot? Get the hell out of here with that pricing. Amazing.

Autumn mums

  • I’ve been using GrandeLASH for almost a month now and I’m not really noticing that much of a difference, so if this doesn’t work I’ll give Revitalash a try and if that doesn’t work? I think I can officially say goodbye to lash serums at last. It’s too exhausting. I can’t care about tiny little pieces of hair for the rest of my life.

  • I will never shut up about how incredible this foot peel is from Target. I only need to use it twice a year and it gives you BABY SOFT feet.

  • Went to Dyments Farm in Dundas to try their burger and whoa. Definitely worth the drive.

Burger at Dyments Farm in Dundas, ON

  • In love with everything at Aerie right now, they’re reminding me of early Aritzia pieces (at the old Aritzia prices) and I should really shut up about it before it becomes like current Aritzia and therefore is way too expensive.

  • Came across a new way to do beach waves with a straightener and it totally works.

  • Are you aware that Staples recycles all old electronics? I brought in some old printers and it’s way easier than taking it to a dump.

  • Is The Ordinary a con? I have never had a positive experience with any of their products. Even the name makes me think they’re just messing with us?

  • Tried and absolutely loved the gluten-free Costco frozen pizza. Makes no sense.

  • The smash burgers at Oklahoma Burgers in Mississauga are decadent as hell.

Oklahoma Burgers in Mississauga, ON

  • Went to the Toronto Vintage Clothing Show for the first time in years and got an insanely nice coat. I only want fun coats for the rest of my life. Also got a mini glass bottle of perfume from the 40s to stay in my purse that was $5.

Perfumes at the Toronto Vintage Clothing Show

  • In love with this Simons belt.

  • I made these turkey meatballs from the LCBO magazine Food & Drink and they were pretty disappointing. Must remember to not trust all their recipes.

  • The dark chocolate pistachios from Trader Joe’s are unholy. Could eat bags and bags of them.

  • Ridiculously in love with the Whole Foods pumpkin bites. A perfect autumn bite.

Pumpkin bites at Whole Foods

  • Some things I watched:

    • The Perfect Couple: Okay, I could argue for an hour about how bad this was. Yes, a whodunit is fun. But that’s where the fun ended. It was so badly written and terribly shot. God, anything can be made these days.

    • The Trini episode of Atlanta: what a great episode. Makes me want to watch the rest of the show.

    • Only Murders in the Building: Really liking this season. The Perfect Strangers moments? Wonderful. I kind of need Richard Kind and Martin Short in a scene together soon though (Clifford reunion!).

    • English Teacher: best new show I’ve seen in SUCH a long time. I love the kid Jeff. The music choices are so good. So many good lines, I can’t even quote them all.

    • Mamma Mia: I’d never seen it, so we put it on and yikes. I truly hate singing in (most) movies. Fast-forwarded all the songs. Other than that, not a terrible movie.

    • Emily in Paris: this tweet really sums up the show.

    • Transformers: Rise of the Beasts: Only my ten year old nephew could get me to watch something like this. It wasn’t terrible! Weird to hear Pete Davidson in it, but definitely not the worst thing I’ve ever seen.

    • Hustlers: Not good. But Mister Bruce was the best part.

    • Rewatched: The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, Dangerous Minds, Barbarian, Old. All still great.

    • I’m watching tons of Twilight Zones episodes each night and this quote (below) from the episode Passage on the Lady Anne just swallowed me up.

“Love has its own particular point of view. It sees everything larger than life. Nothing is too ornate, too fanciful, too dramatic. Love demands the theatrical, and then transfigures it. It turns the grotesque into the lovely, as a child does. With it, we can see what we wish to see in other people. Without it, we can’t see anything at all. We can search forever, and never find.”
— The Twilight Zone

Some things I’m looking forward to this month: finishing up my Halloween costume, cooking everything for Thanksgiving, making the leftover sandwich and I really want to see the movie Hush.

Will forever love sunflowers at night

Fall Fridays Vol. 2

by Liz Heather in Fall Fridays

BAKING/COOKING

I made these pumpkin pecan chocolate chip cookies, which were good if not a little plain.

Pecan pumpkin chocolate chip cookies

CRAVING

All I can think about is making this cornbread stuffing fried rice for Thanksgiving in Canada next week. I think leftovers might be better than the main meal.

DRINKING

Blonde flat whites are the only hot drink at Starbucks that don’t give me a stomach ache.

EATING

As soon as the temperature dropped, I had to make a short rib bolognese.

EXPERIENCING

False lash withdrawal. Should I get them done again? Will there ever be a product that will actually make them grow fast? Am I the problem? Am I too impatient to even give them a chance to grow? Why do I hate my face when I don’t have them? Should this have been a diary entry instead of a weekly update? Yes.

LISTENING

Shower playlists. When I was a teenager, I used to always have music playing while I was in the shower and then I slowly stopped over time and what a dumb move. Especially when showering at night? It takes a few minutes longer to set up, but god is it worth it.

LOVING

This slow cooker turkey breast recipe. I’m missing (real) Thanksgiving this weekend (but celebrating a delayed one next weekend), so I’m doing a mini Thanksgiving for Nathan and I when he gets back from Vegas on Monday.

SHOPPING

The new Trader Joe’s mini autumn candles. Maple sugar was the main draw here, it smells heavenly.

Autumn candles at Trader Joe’s

WATCHING

Finished this season of Only Murders in the Building and it wasn’t as good as the first two seasons, BUT Martin Short and Paul Rudd were the highlights for sure.

WEARING

Seasonal pajamas. Worth it.

And I’ve created an autumn highlight reel on my Instagram incase you care!

August Actions 2023

by Liz Heather in Beauty, Family, Food, Links, Movies, Personal, Products, Recipes, Television, Travel

I may frame this

I may frame this

Summer is almost over and I think this is the first time in years that I’ve been a little sad to see it go. I was able to visit Scotland with my family, Marla came to see me in New York, I spent the majority of August in Ontario with friends and the kids, we played so much of Wii’s Warioware: Smooth Moves, I’m maintaining the tan of my dreams and I’ve never eaten so much fresh corn in my life. What kind of summer-loving fiend have I become?? In any case, here’s what went down in August.

Friend hang!

More friend hangs!

  • I finished my Summer Saturdays series that I loved doing. I’ll definitely do this again (maybe sooner than you think).

  • The best tweets of August can be found over here.

  • Loving the new Urban Outfitters Cherry ICEEEE nail polish.

The coolest job of life would be to come up with nail polish names

  • Obsessed with making this heirloom tomato toast as long as it’s in season.

  • Made these stuffed summer shells that I’d definitely make again. Summer pasta is underrated.

Summer stuffed shells

  • Went to a Blue Jays game with my brother Robbie and some of his kids and it was so great.

Skydome, August 2023

CN Tower, August 2023

  • I need to bite the bullet and just buy the Lemax pumpkin patch train, right?

  • Maple syrup greek yogurt? I never knew how much I needed you.

  • Also made cake pops for the first time with my niece Maya and they turned out perfect. Halloween cake pops up next.

  • At my parent’s house, I found myself constantly making pizza (with store-bought dough) and it’s so much better than I remember homemade pizza being. Maybe it’s because you need to heat the spread-out dough (on parchment, with olive oil rubbed on top) for ten minutes at 450 degrees and THEN put all the sauce/toppings/cheese on it and put it back in for another ten minutes at 500 degrees.

Sausage pizza >

  • If you’re anywhere near Woodstock, Ontario then you need to get these incredibly squeaky cheese curds.

  • Went to the Humber Bay Shores Farmers Market and got this great honey soda.

Incredible honey soda

Beach sit!

  • My greatest discovery this summer? Sponge toffee is ungodly perfect. NO ONE TOLD ME.

  • In my shopping cart:

    • These gorgeous creamy nude polish collection.

    • Snow globe Christmas stamps from the USPS.

    • Warm Apple Pie candle at Bath & Body Works

    • Witches dancing in the moonlight from Lemax (okay, I legit might have a problem)

  • I’m in love with the Silk Creamy Maple Almond milk flavour for iced coffee.

  • My dad got a letter from King Charles for his 100th birthday, which is a big deal whether you care about the royals or not. And since his coronation was in the middle of May and my dad’s birthday was the first week of June, there’s a very good chance that this was the very first 100th birthday letter signed by THE KING OF ENGLAND, which is absolutely the neatest thing on the planet.

Dad’s 100th Birthday letter from King Charles

  • I went to the CNE with my mom and it was lovely. Tried the footlong freak fries that were texturally amazing. I was intrigued by the street corn soft serve but was unwilling to spend over $5 for it. And nobody should pay over $20 for a pina colada in a pineapple so we made them at home instead.

Freak fries at the CNE

Parents with pineapple pina colada

  • I tried the Benefit brow pencil (because I was temporarily out of the Colourpop one I love) and it was absolute trash. Returned it immediately.

  • Also flew in a Harvard airplane!

The coolest photo I’ll ever be in?

  • Some things I watched:

    • Barbie (for the second time): would honestly go a third time if anyone’s into it.

    • The Summer I Turned Pretty (season two): I think I loved this season even more than the first. I loved that almost every episode had some fun event that took over the entire episode (the carnival one, the house party one, the motel one, etc.).

    • Outer Banks (first two seasons): I can’t explain the grip this show has on me. The disgust-turned-to-love I have for JOHN B confuses even me.

    • Simply Irresistible: so laughably awful, I’m surprised Sarah Michelle Gellar got any work after this. The magical crab was the best character.

    • M3GAN: first of all, it’s not a horror movie so it’s weird it was sold that way. It’s really not good, but also very fun to watch with kids.

    • Who Framed Roger Rabbit: I forced the kids to watch this one because my brothers and I saw it about ten thousand times when we grew up. Heathers love this movie.

    • Junior: how did I never see this 90s classic? It should be law to watch one 90s movie each month. They’re so uncomplicated and good.

    • The last ten minutes of Beverly Hills Chihuahua: I came home to my niece Tianna watching this with my mom and Baby Dog and I saw literal minutes of it and cried. I can’t see pretend-dead-dogs even when they turn out to not be dead. I’M ONLY HUMAN. (The movie itself seemed actually adorable, maybe.)

    • And So It Goes (the Michael Douglas/Diane Keaton movie): ugh! So bad. When you get Rob Reiner to do a job meant for Nora Ephron - you get this piece of shit.

    • And Just Like That (season two): are there people out there who don’t see what a train wreck this show is? I want to talk to them. Also, Carrie is not a cat person. Whoever made that choice truly does not understand this character. Since when does Steve speak Italian? Charlotte was the real winner of the season.

    • Only Murders In The Building (season three): love how it’s starting out so far, but it’s not really as exciting as the previous seasons.

    • Summer Rental: truly the worst John Candy movie of all time.

    • Talk To Me: good/original, but too much gross-out horror for me.

  • Since it’s the first day of school today, I always think of what we should’ve been learning in school instead this time of year.

  • I got Baby Dog’s teeth cleaned for the first time in her life and it was a phenomenal experience. I was at Pet Valu and saw that they worked with an organization that cleans your dog’s teeth without putting them under anesthesia. The team at KissableK9 Care was beyond impressive and kind and the whole thing took thirty minutes. I have before and after photos that are pure insanity. I would post them here, but like… even a chihuahua likes her privacy sometimes. Cannot recommend KissableK9 enough!

  • Visited the Applewood outdoor pool in Mississauga a few times and I can’t wait to try their lane swimming next summer.

My babies! (Yes their boyfriends are my babies too I guess…?)

Some things I’m looking forward to this month: putting the final touches on my Halloween costume, creating an autumn list of things to do, taking Nathan to see The Shark Is Broken on Broadway and I really want to eat the tomato salad at Shukette.

The Harvard flight day

If you’ve got any interest in reading last month’s roundup, you can see what went down in July over here. And my summer highlights on Instagram can be seen here.

July Jiffs 2022

by Liz Heather in Best of NYC, Food, Links, Movies, Personal, Recipes, Television

The beginning of August is basically the best time of year because it ushers in the anticipation for autumn and the holidays. Am I reaching? The anticipation of something is almost as sweet as the actual arrival of whatever it is you’re waiting for.

In any case, here’s what went down last month!

  • You can find my favourite tweets of the month over here and here.

  • I wrote about the first leg of my summer trip to London, England.

  • I went to the American Dream mall in New Jersey with my friend Diana, so thankfully I never have to go again! It’s really just a spectacle, and not in a good way. Why would you ever need a mall to have indoor skiing available? Isn’t the best part of skiing the scenery that surrounds the hills? Am I crazy? Regardless, the mall is terrible. It’s way too big, there are countless empty storefronts (because of the ludicrous rent, I’m assuming) and the furniture is gaudy as hell. Absolutely no reason to go again.

Even she is thinking, “Why are we here and what is this.”

Beautiful Diana sitting amongst the idea that money does not equal taste.

“Take me home.”

  • I went to Brighton Beach for the first time with my great friend Paul (who just moved back to NY) and what a fine beach it was. Not as filthy as Coney Island, but almost as nice as Rockaway. I can’t really put into words how incredible it is that he moved back here, so just know that this fact is the highlight of my summer.

Paul! In New York!

  • Speaking of Paul, his perfect husband Richard made us a meal one night using ground beef from Stoudemire Farms (which I’ve always wanted to try) and it was spectacular. Must remember to buy it the next time I’m at the Union Square market on a Friday.

  • I also went to Bar Marseille with Diana and the food was great! It’s right near Rockaway, so I wasn’t expecting a lot from a beachside place but I’d definitely go back. The steak sandwich was perfect.

  • It only took 18 months, but the dog volunteering that Baby Dog and I used to do is finally back! It was cancelled in February 2020 for obvious reasons and just started up again this month. It’s organized through New York Cares and it happens once a month on the Upper West Side. Essentially, you bring your dog to the auditorium of an elderly care center and any residents who love dogs come down to play with them for an hour. We do it each month and the more dogs that come the better, so I should really post about it more on Instagram. Yeah, I’ll get on that. (The next one is scheduled for August 10th, email me for more information if you’re interested.)

Can you tell how excited she is?

  • Since it’s Restaurant Week, Irene and I went to The Grid restaurant at the Great Jones Distillery mainly because I was intensely craving good halibut. And yes, the food was good but it’s extremely overrated. I’m sorry but no restaurant ever should charge for basic bread and butter. It’s offensive. The service was good, but you can just tell people weren’t trained very well. And for a place so new and beautiful, you’d expect a lot more.

  • I saw Mr. Saturday Night on Broadway and all that I can say is wow. A perfect show and a beautiful theatre. Can every single comedian in this town go see it immediately before it closes next month? It’s wildly good. I’ve never felt more seen than I did in this song sung by a comedian’s wife.

Mr. Saturday Night on Broadway, July 2022

  • The only time I like to drink rose is in the summer (I’m pretty original, I know) and I think I found the best tasting one of life.

Ruby Red Rose with Grapefruit

  • I’ve started making garlic butter almost once a week now and I don’t think I’ll ever be able to stop? It’s so superior to every other thing inside my fridge. Sure you could buy garlic butter, but it tastes infinitely better if you make it yourself, I promise.

Homemade garlic butter

  • I made this lamb bolognese from Antoni Porowski and I think it’s even better than the Alison Roman one that I love so much (it might be because I bought the coriander seeds whole and then ground them up in my spice grinder? The flavour of that individual spice is so crazy good, I had no idea). Obviously one is a fast lamb recipe and one is a leisurely one, so I’ll continue to keep both in my rotation. But you absolutely have to make the three hour one at least once to see what I’m talking about. Especially since Costco sells ground lamb now.

Antoni Porowski’s heavenly lamb bolognese

  • I went to the Alamo Drafthouse in Brooklyn for the first time and what a perfect theatre. Love that they have a beautiful bar attached (House of Wax).

  • Some Things I Watched:

    • I really had low expectations, but I went to see Marcel The Shell With Shoes On and it was beyond sweet.

    • Indecent Proposal is on HBO right now so I watched it for the first time and loved it.

    • I saw The Thomas Crown Affair and it’s such a party. I love this kind of 90s movie. Perfect in every way.

    • I watched the first episode of Loot and it really just wasn’t for me.

    • Of course I saw the whole first season of The Bear and it’s as good as everyone says it is. With the exception of the sister, I don’t know if she’s just written badly as a character or the actress is just wretched. Either way, it’s the worst part of a great show. Episode seven is clearly the best one. (Also, I badly want to make this recipe now.)

    • I also saw the whole first season of The Summer I Turned Pretty and this really scratched my summer/teen itch. Perfect summer show.

    • I saw the Victoria’s Secret documentary and oh my god, I might have to stop shopping at Bath & Body Works now.

    • I started the new season of Only Murders In The Building and other than the inclusion of Amy Schumer, it’s been good so far.

    • I also watched Porky’s and Screwballs for some reason?? Obviously I hated both? I think I was just so desperate for an old teen movie that I haven’t seen.

    • After those two disasters I have no other choice but to cleanse my palette and rewatch Clueless.

My absolute favourite Cher outfit

  • I’ve been there a few times, but I think it’s time to declare how much I officially hate Astoria Park. The RFK bridge above makes it way too loud, the jet skis in the water blast the worst music, the grass has more brown patches than any other park in the city, the train is at least a 15 minute walk away, there are zero food or water vendors anywhere. WHY DO PEOPLE LIKE THIS PARK? God, it’s awful.

  • I made these cheesy poblano corn enchiladas and they were really good. In hindsight I should’ve added some shredded chicken or something to them to make them slightly heartier.

Cheesy poblano corn enchiladas

  • I finally went to see the Amityville house and even though they changed the eerie window frames, it’s definitely still creepy. One thing I wasn’t expecting? How nice that town is! It’s like some big secret, I think. Would totally live there.

The house from The Amityville Horror, July 2022

  • I made my favourite strawberry crumble coffee cake and it’s always a winner. Pro tip: use cake flour for the cake part and use regular flour for the crumble topping to really make it perfect.

Strawberry crumble coffee cake

  • I ate the July-only-special Emmy cheeseburger dumplings from Mimi Cheng’s and they were good but not as good as the first time I had the last year. Am I evolving past cheeseburger dumplings…? God I hope not.

Emmy Burger Dumplings (Emmy cheeseburger dumplings in collaboration with Pizza Loves Emily/Emmy Squared, dry-aged beef, aged white cheddar, crushed pretzels, caramelized onions, and Emmy Sauce) Pan-fried only. (8 pieces) $17.25

  • Incase you care, August is the only month you can apply for SNL tickets so get on that, if you so desire.

  • Also, if you’re going to the CNE in Toronto next month, you can get free tickets for kids under 13 if you fill out this form.

Some things I’m looking forward to this month: I’ll continue to mark things off of my summer list, I can’t wait to see my friend Dusty’s movie that’s being screened at the MoMA next week, and I can’t wait to take a few more little summer trips (stay tuned).

Central Park, November 2021

Should I comment on how fast this year has gone by or is that just a commonality of general life now and never needs to be said again?

Here’s what went down in November.

  • You can find my favourite tweets of the month over here and here.

  • I wrote about the very best Thanksgiving recipes. I’m going to do this type of post again for Christmas recipes soon.

  • I detailed my visit to the Treasures exhibit at the New York Public Library.

  • My friend Irene & I tried the pizza at Di Fara’s in Brooklyn and while it was good, it was nowhere near worth the drive out there. Just way too far, we might as well have gone to New Jersey. Good pizza, though!

Di Fara Pizza, Brooklyn

  • Here’s some advice on how to have a cheaper Christmas this year because everything costs a million dollars now?

  • If you’ve never been to the Octagon House in Irvington, New York then you now have no excuse not to go for yourself.

  • New things I watched:

    • Only Murders in the Building - phenomenal! Everyone should watch! Can’t recommend it enough.

    • Squid Game - yes I’m the last person on earth who watched it and yes it was fantastic. That old man! Fuck!

    • The newest season of Curb Your Enthusiasm - yeah, I think I can’t watch anymore. I think I’m done with love/hate relationships because there’s no actual love here and why am I doing this to myself?

    • The newest season of Big Mouth - the shame episode is phenomenal. This is just such a good show, I’m so glad it exists.

    • The newest season of Nora From Queens - this season was really up and down for me, but it finished really strong. This is corny but the idea of not being lost if you have people you care for and who care for you? I love it. I’m in. The father is by far the best character and maybe the main reason I keep watching at this point.

    • That’s Entertainment! Have you heard of this old movie? It’s not even a movie really, it’s a collection of moments from old Hollywood productions. I’d never even heard of Esther Williams, but oh my god what a woman.

  • I made these salty vanilla espresso chocolate chip cookies that exceeded expectations. I think I might only like cookies that have chocolate in them. It’s nice to finally realize this. It’s also nice to admit to fully being a child with this preference.

  • I can’t remember the last time autumn in New York looked this beautiful.

The Bow Bridge in Central Park, November 2021

  • A list of ten things you should do before Christmas (with the exception of visiting the Waldorf since it reopens in 2023).

  • Slightly obnoxious reminder: GET GIFT RECEIPTS.

  • Have you tried a satsuma mandarin? A seedless beauty.

  • New seasonal candles at Trader Joe’s!

  • My brother Gary’s podcast has returned and his first episode back was about Alf and it couldn’t be greater.

  • Nathan and I saw Jeff Daniels in To Kill A Mockingbird on Broadway and it was so, so good. Everyone should see him in it. But it was also just such a great feeling to be out on the town and dressed up.

November 2021

  • We’re redecorating our apartment right now and I couldn’t be more in love with our new washroom shelving. I feel like that sentence might make you sad for me, but don’t be! I’m actually living a really fun, cool life.

  • I’ve been craving tomato soup lately and the one at Il Bambino in Astoria is too perfect. But stay far far away from the one at Astoria Bier & Cheese because their tomato soup is putrid (which is weird because their sandwiches are great).

  • I’ve made this 10-ingredient lentil bolognese a few times and I think it’ll be in my permanent recipe rotation. It’s really hearty, but not at all bland and you really don’t miss the meat.

Vegan Lentil Bolognese

  • I’ll forever love Boursin cheese, this will always be true. And their new fig & balsamic flavour? Out of this world good.

  • I went to the beautiful restaurant on the water Red Hat on the River with my dear friend Diana and it was good! Nothing spectacular, but good. The mussels are the main reason to go, in my opinion. Tasty as hell.

  • I’m really on the fence about reusable gift wrap, but it does look simplistic and pretty.

  • I visited the Lyndhurst mansion that has been newly decorated for the holidays and it was very quaint. I will admit that the Octagon House was a little bit more exciting, but I’ll never turn down a visit to a nice house in the country.

  • Loved this list of 90s Dad Thrillers, it’s just such a good genre.

  • Have you heard of the dollar-store-esque store Five Below? I hadn’t until this month and I’m mad I didn’t know about it sooner.

  • Can someone please buy me the winter spiced cranberry Sprite? Why does it look so damn good?

  • Loved, loved, loved this performance (below).

  • So I perused the new Chrissy Teigen cookbook and there’s really nothing exciting in it. And is it just me or does she use fish sauce as her “special ingredient” in almost every dish she has? And I like fish sauce, but this is getting ridiculous.

  • The fabric ornaments at West Elm are extremely cute this year. Did I need to buy a mouse wearing a sweater when I saw it and fell in love with it? I guess this is my life now?

  • Absolutely addicted to the new herbaceous cheesy bites from Trader Joe’s. A smaller, fancier mozzarella stick? I’m in, baby. (Also their seasonal rosemary nuts are fantastic.)

  • I had THE worst eyelash extension experience at Wow Threading Studio on 26th Street and no one should ever ever ever get eyelash “cluster” extensions. They couldn’t be worse. (Scathing review in the Yelp link.)

  • Incase you love seasonal episodes:

  • I bought a new winter mug with white snowflakes on Etsy and I’m in love.

  • Tried a donut from Mochi Mochi and you know what? I don’t like donuts that much these days, but this one I liked. Less dense than other donuts. (Tip: if you’re looking for Squid Game Dalgona candy, they sell them here at their location in Herald Square.)

  • The Union Square Holiday Market has begun and the duck fat poutine from Duck Season was INSANITY. So, so good. Better than some Canadian poutines. Go immediately.

  • As soon as the colder weather starts, I always buy one new couch blanket (I guess adults call them throw blankets) and I’m in love with this Banana Republic Factory one (in the Burnt Umber colour). What is umber? Couldn’t tell you. But I can tell you that it’s chocolate coloured.

  • The Metropolitan Postcard Club sponsors a special two day show every November where approximately thirty-five to forty postcard dealers from around the nation and the world attend to introduce their cards to the public, so of course I went and here are some of the best ones I came across.

  • I went to see the Dior exhibit at The Brooklyn Museum and I reviewed it over here.

  • The Thanksgiving croissant returned in all its glory! It is now $9 (because 2021 won’t let you have affordable things anymore), but it’s still amazing tasting. I also tried Milk Bar’s apple cake which was good but way too sweet. And their cinnamon pretzel soft serve was delicious. This place exhausts me with their new menu items, I don’t know how they continuously keep it up.

  • I think I’ve found the greatest scent of all time at Bath & Body Works: Fall Citrus Harvest.

  • I’ve mentioned my love of Supermoon Bakehouse before and my sweet friends Katie & Greg (thankyouthankyou!) got me a giant box treats from them that was absolutely decadent and incredible. Everyone must visit this bakery.

Some things I’m looking forward to this month:

  • I made this home movie of the holidays a few years ago that I might make again this year since we haven’t been together as a full family since December 2019 and I beg you to maybe do one of your own as well because you will watch it over and over, I promise.

  • If you’re at all superstitious or just, like, a cool person - don’t forget to buy your bayberry candles!

  • Will I be watching all of the snowy movies on this list? I’m only human, I have to.

  • While I’m in Ontario, I really want to get my hands on this vegan cheese that’s supposed to be incredible.

  • I’m planning on making roast beef on Christmas Eve mainly so I can make these roast beef sandwiches for lunch on Christmas Day.

If you have any interest in reading what went on in October, come on over here.
