Yes I did a post like this only nine days ago, but the tweets have been on fire so here were the best of the best from the World Series games so far!
October Occurrences 2022
Ontario, Canada - October 2022
This might be the hardest week of the year because itâs officially the longest period of time until next Halloween. I tend to take a few days to decompress a bit, so by this coming weekend Iâll be fully ready for holiday-mode. That being said, October was such a great month that felt like almost a year long - in a good way. Hereâs what went down.
You can find my favourite tweets of the month over here and here.
I think itâs clear that I watched every good 90s Halloween sitcom episode that I could find links for.
For Halloween, I dressed up as Tony Montana (Al Pacino) from Scarface and Baby Dog was, umm, my main accessory.
In love with this article, âThe Secret To Marriage Is Never Getting Married.â
Iâve always wanted to make the Nestle Toll House chocolate chip oatmeal cookies recipe (on the back of the Toll House package) and they were really, really good. Might become a staple in my cookie repertoire.
I made these soft pumpkin cookies with salted maple icing again this year and they continue to be incredible - and thatâs coming from someone who truly hates soft cookies.
I also made these garlic butter chicken meatballs with creamy orzo (in a slow cooker) and the meatballs were great, Iâll definitely make those again. But the orzo cooked in a crockpot? Hard pass. Pasta always tastes terrible from a crockpot, I knew this and still went ahead, so itâs my fault really.
I was in Canada for awhile, so IâŠ
Went to the new(ish) Keg near Square One and it kind of sucked? What the hell? The meat was nowhere worth the price, which is weird because I remember that it used to be better. Iâm trying to find my new Canyon Creek (since it closed) and itâs a hard task to undertake but I wonât give up.
I had the burger from Ozzyâs Burgers and the lamb was terrible, but the regular burgers were fantastic.
My niece Layla turned 17 (!) so thankfully we were able to get the Milk Bar birthday cake from the Toronto location. Itâs such a shame that location is closing at the end of the year.
I also planted some bulbs in the garden with my mom, which makes me even more excited for spring to come next year to see if anything blooms.
I tried the new Lays flavour Fries & Gravy and good god I love this country.
I made the apple fritter cake (again) for (Canadian) (real) Thanksgiving and I. love. this. cake.
My dad put up his seasonal bird feeder and I think Iâve said this before, but the answer to life is getting a bird feeder and then sitting down to watch it. Nothing better.
Heaven on earth?
My dad & Baby Dog, October 2022
Mississauga, Ontario - October 2022
Fries & Gravy Lays
Oakville, Ontario - October 2022
I made my way to the Harvest Moon Farm & Orchard in North Salem, NY (with my friend Diana) where we had the best warm apple cider donuts and cider mimosas. Afterward we went for brunch at The Arch restaurant, which was beautiful & old, but nothing really spectacular food-wise.

On Halloween, I took Baby Dog on our annual autumn visit to Central Park and it was bursting with beauty.

When it comes to all purpose cleaners, Iâm in love with Mrs. Meyers. The snowdrop scent is my favourite one (which should be coming out again soon), but I just got the apple cider one and yikes. Itâs perfect. Is it sad to have favourite seasonal all purpose cleaners? Absolutely. But here we are. Welcome to your late 30s.
Now if weâre talking seasonal coffee drinks? The Starbucks pumpkin cream cold brew (only 1/2 shot of syrup, extra foam) makes me a little sick by the end of the drink, but I still love it. And the vanilla cream cold brew at Tim Hortons is also really good. Oooo and the Tim Hortons hazelnut cold brew with espresso foam? Get out of here, so good. I think I just like foam.
Loving the new Charlie Brown stamps from the USPS. Wait, who is in charge of deciding the new stamps? Oh god, have I discovered the greatest job on earth? I THINK I HAVE??
So I got a new Apple charger from The Apple Store, the one that apparently charges faster. Aaaaaand my battery dies even quicker now! Sweet!
I was scrambling to find a dress for a wedding this month and Bloomingdaleâs saved me. How do I always forget about that place? I love an old, good department store. Yes they can be overwhelming, but theyâre practically deserted. I have to remember this for the future. Oh! And Macyâs too! Such great dresses for special occasions.
So Nathan and I went to Los Angeles for a wedding (the dress code was âoutdo usâ) and we stayed at Citizen M hotel in downtown LA. Let me just say that this is not the type of hotel for two people to share a room, thatâs the nicest way I can put it. Itâs definitely clean and relatively nice, but the rooms are laughably small. The wedding was fun and I loved walking around downtown LA mostly because of the incredibly well preserved buildings. Sure, the area is pretty dicey but itâs beautifully ancient. We walked to Santee Alley (where I got my new favourite feather clutch) and three days was the perfect amount of time to stay in that area. And the baja tacos from Tocaya were insanely good. Also the Wolfgang Puck Express stand at LAX had really good food to take on the plane.

Ummm, is Nathan somehow cooler in LA??
Okay hold up, are we BOTH COOLER IN LA??
WE BAD
California blonde dreams coming true

The Eastern Columbia Building opened in 1930 - Downtown LA
The Orpheum Theatre opened in 1926 - Downtown LA
Speaking of airports, the restaurant The Hearth by Lynn Crawford at Pearson in Terminal 1 in Toronto is great! Get the meatballs. Love it when airport food is above average.
Of course I listened to the new Taylor Swift album Midnights and the best songs are QuestionâŠ?, Sweet Nothing, Anti-Hero, Bejeweled, Maroon and Youâre On Your Own, Kid.
Some things I watched this month:
Smile: such a fun time. Love a fun horror movie.
I rewatched the first two Friday The 13th movies with Layla (her first time seeing them) and Iâd forgotten how good they were. They really hold up well over time.
Recent SNLs: Nothing super noteworthy in any of the episodes, I like the new guys. I was introduced to that great Megan Thee Stallion song Anxiety, which I canât stop playing. The worst sketch Iâve seen in years was that Jack Harlow one with the joker. Just awful. Oh, and Colin Farrell looks alarmingly good.
Celebrity Jeopardy: I solely watched because I love Ike Barinholtz (and he was great). But look, I know that Celebrity Jeopardy is, like, the easiest Jeopardy to exist. I understand that. But I had no idea how incredibly dumb most celebrities are. I mean, I know theyâre not exactly known for their IQ levels but this was actually just wild to watch. Every single person on each episode I saw was a complete moron (with the exception of Ike and Simu Liu).
Barbarian: so great, loved every bit of it. Bill SkarsgĂ„rd remains as hot as always. (Sidenote: I was gushing about SkarsgĂ„rd later to Nathan before bed and he scoffed and dismissed it so I asked him, âYou probably donât even have an answer, but who would you consider an attractive celebrity man?â and without even a second of hesitation he goes, âPierce Brosnan in â97.â Hahahahahah, god I died. Heâs not wrong.)
Some things Iâm looking forward to this month: Iâve already put my order in for this yearâs bayberry candles, Iâm finally going to read Dave Grohlâs book, of course Iâll get the Thanksgiving croissant from Milk Bar, Iâm definitely gonna go to the NY postcard show, and Iâve already got my ticket to see the Thierry Mugler exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum which opens on the 18th. Oh! And a gentle reminder if youâve started Christmas shopping: get the damn gift receipt.
If you have any interest in reading what went on in September, come on over here.
Ray of sunshine on my ray of sunshine
April Activities 2022
Yes, Iâm late on the monthly post but there are approx. three people who read these posts so WEâLL ALL LIVE. Hereâs what went down in April!
NATHANâS TV SHOW TRAPPED PREMIERED! Itâs available only in Canada on Bell Fibe TV1 but I have a link to it if youâre interested in watching and youâre not in Canada (message me about it). So wildly proud of how good it is and I promise youâll love it.
I wrote about seeing the great Birthday Candles on Broadway.
I did Nathanâs podcast again and we talked about the Netflix show Old Enough and whether or not you can question women.
I talked about visiting the beautiful New York Transit Museum and why you should too.
I came across this wonderful Kurt Vonnegut letter.
I should have loved this recipe for lemon orzo with parmesan and peas, but it was definitely missing something. Maybe a basil vinaigrette shouldâve been mixed in? Maybe some grilled chicken? There are so many recipe blogs now that everything has become so boring and bland.
I went to Hudson Yards for the first time and itâs⊠a lot. I had no idea there was so much going on in that area. Had drinks at Peak with Jessie mainly for the view and it was lovely! If you find yourself shopping in that area, a drink up there should definitely be on your list.
I looked through the new Half Baked Harvest cookbook and there might be some decent recipes in there (like the rosemary chicken salad with bacon shallot vinaigrette or the lasagna alla vodka or the balsamic stuffed mushrooms with basil and orzo). Will I buy it? Time will tell. Buying a new cookbook is such a commitment.
I went to the antique store No Particular Hours finally and it was a little disappointing. I donât know what I was expecting, but I figured that since it was only open on the weekends itâd be a bit more exciting? How does this logic make sense? Iâm not sure. In any case, itâs nothing special. I think antique shops might only be good in the suburbs.
Iâve said it before and Iâll say it again: Easter candy is EONS better than Halloween candy. And the Dove milk chocolate peanut butter eggs give you a reason to live. But that being said, the Lindt mini eggs completely sucked. Thereâs a weird powder on them that didnât seem normal, the Cadbury ones are waaay better.
Baby Dog and I went to Central Park because everything is in bloom and itâd be a sin not to go and see it all.
Things I Watched:
The House of the Devil: uuuuugggghhhh, words canât express how terrible this was. I canât stand when directors who arenât Alfred Hitchcock show up in their own movies. It always seems desperate. I might officially hate Ti West (god even that name, I cringe writing it).
Speaking of awful things, I did a brief hate-watch of some seasons of Entourage for some reason. Whatâs wrong with me?
Also rewatched some of The League and it really doesnât hold up after all these years. Every scene with Jason Mantzoukas is magic and Andre (Paul Scheer) is by far the best character, but other than that itâs definitely not worth a rewatch.
Euphoria: I watched all two seasons of it at once and loved Kat & Ethan (until she was awful in the second season to him), obviously loved the idea of Lexi & Fez, and I kind of hate Rue & Jules. I just canât stand Jules. The last two episodes of season two especially? So messy. Love mess.
I saw the Lizzo SNL and these two sketches were by far the funniest ones: the Black Eyed Peas one and the Venga Bus one.
Life of Kylie: do you remember this sad attempt at a show? It was on while I was getting my nails done and just wow. Apparently money canât stop you from being boring. (Also, small side note: if these people werenât absolutely wretched, I would feel immensely bad for the awful face work that Scott has had done recently. Someone forced a clip of their new show on me and itâs shocking that bad plastic surgery can still be achieved even if you have millions. Sad.)
Old Enough: love how low maintenance this is, perfect show, no notes.
I attempted the first season of Atlanta and only got through the first three episodes. I do want to watch that Trinidadian funeral episode from this season though because Iâve only heard good things (from one person, my brother Robbie, but thatâs enough to spark my interest). I donât think Iâve ever seen any show attempt to show what a Caribbean funeral is like and Iâd love to see if they got it right.
Bao: Pixar is really incredible sometimes (Iâm aware that we all know this already). I feel like all moms would love this short.
Turning Red: Okay, so Iâm going to have strong opinions about a movie based in Toronto. And here they are. No Canadian has ever said the word âhoserâ to any other Canadian. Can we all just accept that and move on? Itâs embarrassing. Also, when the mother over-pronounced the word âTorontoâ you could immediately tell that little to no research was done on this movie. It takes place in 2002 and the $5 bills they showed were the new ones that definitely came out after 2002. And the birthday cake Timbits they mentioned came out in 2014. Am I a loser for pointing these things out? NOPE! How hard is it to research a movie with a budget of millions?! IâM not the problem here. And look, all that being said yes itâs a good movie. Itâs a real âcall your momâ movie.
Weâve been making homemade iced green tea for about a year now, but I started getting flavoured green tea and itâs taken things to a whole new level.
Iâve never even heard of the Canadian singer Virginia To Vegas, but Iâm obsessed with the two songs betterman and selfish.
I will not stop re-buying these pocketed leggings from Aerie. So damn soft.
I went out to a winery in the Hamptons (Macari Vineyards) with my friend Diana and what a great time we had. Sometimes I forget how good it feels to leave the city for a day.
Nathan and I saw American Buffalo on Broadway with Sam Rockwell (what a compete fox) and what a fucking party. It was so good, that man is incredible, I love that theatre (Circle in the Square), I canât recommend it enough. This was the first Mamet play Iâve ever seen, so I was already excited. The set is incredible, everyone did so well, and we managed to get lottery tickets through TodayTix that were amazing seats. GO GO GO.
Real fast: if you find yourself in Richmond, Virginia then you have to go to the Hotel Greene to play mini golf INSIDE this gorgeous, old hotel. Nathan did it while he was there for shows and it looks incredible.
Things Iâm looking forward to: Iâm definitely going to go see part two of the new costume exhibit at The Met, Stanley Tucciâs second season of Searching For Italy is finally airing so I canât wait to see that, this might sound stupid but Ina Garten is in Europe for two weeks and sheâs posting in her stories about her favourite places and I am enthralled I canât wait to hear about them, and I must visit the new restaurant Le Gratin inside my precious Beekman.
If youâve got any interest in reading last monthâs roundup, you can see what went down in March over here.
January Jewels 2022
This is obvious, but was that the longest January that ever Januaried? Also, I had to sit down and do the math yesterday to remind myself of my age, what is happening? Time isnât real anymore so we should all just silently, but confidently stop looking at clocks. Like when a clockâs battery dies, just donât replace itâŠ? I donât know, but that feels like it could be an answer to something.
You can find my favourite tweets of the month over here and here.
I made a list of the best of 2021 (recipes, experiences, etc.).
I compiled my favourite photos from 2021.
I recapped how my 2021 resolutions went - why donât more people do this? If they did, then maybe there wouldnât be such a stigma around making resolutions in the first place. I completely failed in getting some of mine done, but like⊠thatâs okay? Not everything has to be a success.
I also wrote out my 2022 resolutions that Iâm actually very excited about.
There were giant snowstorms in Toronto & NYC so I made a list of the best TV snow day episodes to watch. (And thereâs also a list of the best snowy movies to watch over here.)
The Broadway shows I saw this month:
The Phantom of The Opera - went with Nathan (his first time, my gazillionth) and he loved it! Thank god too, because if he didnât⊠letâs just say Iâd TAKE UMBRAGE.
MJ: The Musical - it was really good. It does seem insane that it was still made after everything, but the actors were great and the dancing was incredible. Iâm sure it wonât last and maybe thatâs a good thing? I donât know.
Come From Away - went with Nathan and it was good! I canât see myself ever wanting to see it again, but it was good.
Restaurant Week has returned and so has the heavenly wild mushroom soup with truffle oil & mascarpone at Giorgioâs of Gramercy.
The Sparrow Tavern just reopened and good christ, they might have the most incredible burger in Astoria. Just wild, wild stuff.
Itâs winter and I canât stop making this zucchini lasagna.
I made these ginger sesame noodles with caramelized mushrooms and while they were good, there were way too many steps to get to the eventual meal. Noodles need not be so complicated! Just as a sidenote: I feel like 90% of food bloggers should take, like, a yearlong break or something. Thereâs too much content when it comes to new recipes online and so much of it just isnât any good and might be wasting all of our time. Am I wrong?
Bookmarked this helpful piece: The Best Restaurant at Every Major U.S. Airport.
I made the Momofuku Soy & Scallion noodles from the package sold at Target and it was pretty good! I added zero ingredients other than what came with the package and yes that was a mistake, but Iâll add more to it next time since there are five packets left. Iâm thinking caramelized onions, mushrooms and maybe actual chopped raw scallions too. Ooo yeah, that sounds good.
I went to Bench Flour Bakers for the first time and what a sweet little place, I just wish it were closer to civilization. I had a scone that was incredible, great coffee and I canât wait to go back to try their duck burger. The soup was a bit of a yikes situation but thatâs my fault, I never like English pea soup so that was my mistake to order it.
Iâve been using the brightening powder from dpHUE and I canât really tell if itâs working. It also has this weirdly strong metallic smell, which canât be good?? Probably should return.
I tried a sandwich from Alidoro in the West Village and WOW is that place overrated and laughably expensive for what youâre getting. Iâve made better sandwiches AT HOME. There are better sandwiches in literally every corner bodega. How on earth is this place succeeding?
I also went into Sullivan Street Bakery next to Alidoro and what the hell? Why is that place so small? Isnât it supposed to be a big deal? This whole street was a joke.
I walked across the Brooklyn Bridge, checked out the Time Out Market in DUMBO and then walked over to visit the New York Transit Museum and I did a full post on the museum over here.
Iâve been using the Three Ships lip exfoliator, lip mask and face mask and theyâre all really good products. Love the act of having to mix up your own mask in a little bowl before it goes on your face. Seems like a great company. (Thank you, Harmeet!)
I was a little disappointed to hear that Forsythia is introducing a $75/per person tasting menu now, but then I realized theyâre doing a $40/per person two course meal with wine at the bar so I canât wait to return.
I finally ate at Mamo with my dear friend Diana and it was good! Truthfully the food was very okay, but the addition of truffles to everything is the main draw here. Itâs also a beautiful place, so itâs definitely worth a visit.
Diana then took me to Angelina Bakery in Bryant Park for dessert since she had heard good things about it, and bless her heart but I think this place slightly misses the mark. Theyâre big on chestnut cream here, which in my opinion tastes like air? Itâs weird because once you taste it you think, âOo this texture is niceâ and then you wait for the flavour to kick in, but it never does. Itâs odd. Usually the French are good at desserts. And they do look beautiful, but thatâs where the intrigue ends. Oh god, and the hot chocolate! Waaaay too chocolatey, but this is a personal preference. For comparison, Iâve always hated the City Bakery hot chocolate that most people adore, so take this with a grain of salt. (If you are in the area for something sweet, I vote that you go to the Lady M around the block or the Japanese chocolate king Royce.) (And Diana, please continue to introduce me to new places - even if theyâre trash, I want to go with you!)
In love with the seasonal lemon poppy seed cruller at Daily Provisions. God, I love a cruller, theyâre lighter/tastier than a donut but sweeter than a boring croissant. And those sexy ridges? Get out of here.
There was a big snowstorm last week, so I woke up at 6am and took the train to Central Park. Itâs something Iâve always wanted to do and it was so worth it. I arrived before sunrise and it was absolutely breathtaking. It snowed the entire time and all you could hear were the birds. I canât truly express how magical it felt. It also led to a crazy amount of people liking one of the photos I took that morning, which, you know, feels nice unfortunately. Iâm a whore for likes.
Sephora birthday gifts are back and⊠they donât seem that great? What nonsense is this?? (The Ulta birthday gifts have been announced too and why is everything so disappointing?)
Speaking of Sephora, I tried the lip oil from Merit and returned it the next day. Lip oil just isnât necessary. You get the same effect when you use lip balm, when will women see this scam??
I also sampled some Kylie Skin products (I know, donât judge, I really just wanted to try them to have an opinion) and they were all awful. The face wash leaves your face tight and extremely dry, the toner does absolutely nothing but burn a bit (in a bad way) and the face lotion is thick as hell and leaves this gross film on your face. And the âhigh glossâ looks like itâs a kidâs product to use at playtime. Returned everything obviously.
I tried the Impossible chicken nuggets and they taste identical to regular chicken nuggets. If I were an eight year old vegetarian, Iâd be jacked right about now.
I stopped by Leonelli inside The Evelyn and their slice was incredible, Iâm dying to try the roast chicken sandwich next time.
I know I mentioned it last month, but I have to make a mental note to remember to buy all of the snowdrop scented Mrs. Meyerâs items that come out again in November (minus the hand wash because Iâm loyal to my foam soap). This scent has given my life meaning?
I had a Chip City cookie and itâs nothing too crazy, Levain is definitely better.
I made this sour cream banana bread and how could it not be good? Love a banana bread.
Iâve never been a giant fan of salmon but Iâve made this lemon brown buttered salmon recipe twice now and itâs oddly delicious. Is browned butter the answer to typically gross food? Yes. Yes, it is.
If youâre Canadian, do you remember Christine Cushing? Iâd completely forgotten about her but recently came across her YouTube channel and I forgot how much I liked her and the way she cooks.
What Iâve watched this month:
The Golden Girls - honestlyâŠ. just a fun, great time. I never watched it as a kid but I randomly put on one episode while I was cooking and itâs wonderful. Iâm almost done the whole series. Few thoughts? Thereâs an entire episode about Blancheâs husband coming back to life (she thought he was dead) and the whole storyline is about how he faked his death and how it turns her life upside down and then this scene happens at the end <spoiler> that reveals it was just a recurring dream that she has about her husband and how it isnât a sad dream because it helps her remember him to keep his spirit alive and I donât know if Iâm doing it justice, but itâs the sweetest scene and so unexpected somehow. Also, Rose is definitely the best character. And last thought? I really donât care for Sophia, sheâs much too mean. I understand that sheâs supposed to be, but I wince every time she enters a scene.
Scream (5) <spoilers> - look, Iâll always love the franchise but hereâs the ranking of the best ones to worst: Scream, Scream 2 (Scream: The College Years), Scream 3 (Scream Goes Hollywood), Scream 5, and finally Scream 4. And thatâs not me hating it! There just⊠there didnât need to be this many movies. The original will never be matched and thatâs okay! Certain parts of the new one were great of course - Deweyâs âIâve been stabbed nine timesâ and I loved the Skeet Ulrich hallucinations because they were hilarious. Itâs really just a fun movie that revisits the original in a decent way. Scream 4 is the real bad one of the franchise, so letâs all just agree that thatâs the one weâll collectively forget.
I was thinking about watching the new Pamela Anderson/Tommy Lee thing on Hulu but then I heard that she didnât even want it made! At first I thought that seems impossible because how could it get made without their approval, but like⊠that tape was released without their approval, so I guess it kind of makes sense? In any case, thereâs no way Iâll watch it now.
I had lunch at The Regency Bar & Grill and oh what a nice little spot. The caesar salad was perfectly dressed and the eight hour short rib was decadent and perfect. Service was great, too. Love a good hotel restaurant.
New habits Iâve adopted this past month:
When I buy something in a store, I do a quick check on my phone to see if thereâs a cheaper price for the same item on their companyâs website OR if they price-match with other stores, I quickly look that up as well. This last week alone I think Iâve saved maybe $20. Is everyone doing this and no one is talking about it? Or am I a little too proud of my cheapness?
If someone mentions a name of someone famous that I donât know, Iâve decided to stop looking them up to find out who they are. Frankly, I shouldnât care and I love not knowing things that do not affect me directly.
I am going to stop buying flights through third party websites. Itâs always such an annoying hassle to deal with them if something goes wrong with your flight, and yes airlines are complete scumbags but at least if you book directly, the chances of being treated better are higher.
This last habit isnât really for me, itâs for you: youâre not using Q-tips in your ears, are you? Please stop! Apparently it even says on the packaging that you shouldnât use them in your ears. Please, please stop! Ear health! Itâs important!
Iâve learned the secret to what youâre supposed to do when youâre done having acrylic/artificial nails - get a gel manicure as soon as the fake ones are removed. That way your little baby nails are protected for a few weeks while they re-adjust to being normal sized again.
Some things Iâm looking forward to this month:
Cooking something special for Valentineâs Day, Iâm not sure what yet but Iâd like to try and make something new/fancy. Maybe these browned butter scallops with champagne risotto. Maybe a duck ragu pasta. Oooo or maybe these incredible cauliflower toasts as an appetizer.
I would really love to learn how to do the splits. You might think itâs impossible, but Iâve seen some videos that will make you eat your hat in a few months time.
I officially started keeping track of my receipts (I should be embarrassed that I havenât done this before but here we are), so Iâm kind of excited to see how that goes. I want to go through every one at the end of each month and see what the hell Iâm spending too much on. This might be a terrible idea.
If you have any interest in reading what went on in December, come on over here.
January Jewels 2021
Wonderful, a new month! Even Iâm not sure when Iâm being sarcastic anymore. You know what I realized this month? This is technically year three of Covid-19 since it started in late 2019. Should I have kept that information to myself? Probably. Iâm sorry. In any case, time moves on and weâre in a new month, so hereâs what went down last month.
Before I begin, every January I make sure to:
Mark down all important holidays/birthdays/anniversaries (also Daylight Saving Times, Motherâs Day, Fatherâs Day, Thanksgiving) on my calendar
Check expiration dates for passport/license/health card/insurance/vet vaccinations and write down any important renewal dates
I recapped how my 2020 resolutions turned out. Spoiler alert: itâs not impressive.
I made my 2021 resolutions because Iâm determined to live optimistically.
Here are some of my favourite photos from 2020.
I really want to make these A-Z foods that Iâve never made before throughout the year. Kind of really excited about this.
Iâve officially become obsessed with making end-of-the-year videos.
The new 2021 birthday gifts at Sephora have been announced! (Speaking of Sephora, have you seen the price point for Jennifer Lopezâs new line of products? Hahahahah, just wild.)
I read and reviewed Alek Trebekâs memoir, which was really good.
I made this carbonara from Bon Appetite and it BLEW! It was the first recipe that I made this year so I. was. PISSED.
I couldnât find a Detroit style pizza place near my parentâs house (grow up, Mississauga) so I had no other choice but to get takeout from Descendant in Toronto and it was incredible.
I listened to Taylor Swiftâs evermore and the favourites are: champagne problems, tolerate it, and evermore.
Iâve been using my parentâs air fryer and, surprise surprise, itâs amazing. Obviously it makes everything taste great, but the best part is that itâs so much faster than a regular oven. The best thing Iâve made so far was definitely these pickles.
These are the greatest frozen french fries in Canada. Eat them. I promise. Theyâre lightly coated, but still thin and crispy.
Iâd never even heard of The Devilâs Own which seems insane because two of the hottest nineties men are in it. Good movie? Not so much. Iâd watch it again on mute though maybe.
If youâd like to momentarily be transported back to your childhood on Saturday mornings, get your ass over here for a second.
Speaking of the past, do you remember Heritage Minutes in Canada? God, some of them were really, really good. My favourite ones were the Laura Secord one, the Superman one, the Winnie one, and definitely the Marconi one.
I bought another bodysuit from Aritzia, but I mean look at this one. Itâs heavenly. I canât wait to wear it for Baby Dog on my way to the kitchen.
And I mean since I was already on the site, I also bought this honey/beige-coloured headband and matching mittens. I officially look adorable.
Still in love with the Dennis Gross peels, I just wish they werenât so unreasonably priced.
I made this BA pasta with mushrooms and it was waaay too salty, what the hell is going on with me fucking up recipes these days?!
I tried this frozen vegan pizza and it was actually not terrible! Like, not as terrible tasting as regular frozen pizza.
Remember Grand & Toy (it was near Walterâs Music in Square One in the 90s)? I have to make a mental note to start using them instead of Staples. I loved that store for school supplies when I was a kid. Gotta support.
Iâve been watching the new Jeopardy! episodes with Ken Jennings and the first one was terrible in my opinion mainly because it just felt so wrong, but as Iâve kept watching I think itâs becoming less weird. I am excited to see the other guest hosts just to see how different theyâll each be.
I tried this drugstore John Frieda sea spray and it was complete crap. I may have overused it, but thatâs really not my fault. Why in the hell donât hair product labels tell you how many pumps you should use?! I swear to god, if only I were running thingsâŠ
I made popovers for the first time and they were surprisingly easy! I might never buy a dinner roll ever again.
I love the softness of these Indigo pajamas so much that I bought them twice (in both red & blue).
I heard the old Frank Sinatra song Thatâs Life on the radio the other day and got so teary, maybe âcause I havenât heard it in years? Maybe âcause itâs just a perfect song? Am I slowly just losing it? While it was playing, I just kept saying to myself âThat IS life!â Yeah, might have lost it.
I watched the newest season of Big Mouth and loved it. The anxiety mosquito might be the best new character introduced in the middle of a series OF ALL TIME. Such a great show.
I started watching Superstore (mostly in the background) and itâs pretty good! Iâve only seen a few episodes, but I definitely get the appeal.
I made these ganache-stuffed chocolate chip cookies and they were just lovely. Love a ganache, love that word.
Also made these salted tahini butter chocolate chip cookies (quite good!) because Iâm going through a light depression, evidently.
My friend Dusty got his film Violation into Sundance and itâs wild that I know such immensely talented people. So, so proud of him.
I made blintzes with a Grand Marnier mascarpone (the blintz recipe is, of course, from Chef John and the mascarpone recipe is from one of Stanley Tucciâs cookbooks). It was delicious. It seems so intimidating to make crepes, but it was actually so easy and fun. Plus it looks like itâd be such a complicated thing to make, but Iâd say itâs even easier than baking cookies.
I tried to read Ijeoma Oluoâs newest book Mediocre and I just couldnât get into it. Even I was surprised because I love her work, so maybe Iâll give this one another try at a later date.
I had a real craving for a good bagel and since Iâm not near Brooklyn Bagel in Astoria at the moment, I looked up the best place in this area for a bagel and went to the Old Bagel House on Lakeshore. And look, I respect what theyâre doing, but they donât hold a candle to New York bagels. Hard pass.
Iâve been using this tea tree night lotion from The Body Shop for years now, it really calms down your face before bed. Their entire tea tree collection is hard to beat.
I bought this jewelry stand and jewelry box both from Simons and theyâre so divine.
Loving this makeup brush cleaner (especially the mini size for traveling). Expensive brush cleaners make zero sense to me.
I tried the Snoop Dogg wine and it was wine! (Thereâs not a spelling error or word missing there, it really was just wine.)
I made Creamy Cod & Potato Gratin and it was delicious, god I love tarragon.
I recently started eating frozen Canadian wild blueberries and they taste so blueberry. Itâs madness. Theyâre so tiny and full of flavour, I couldnât believe it. Iâm so used to the blandness of blueberries from literally everywhere else. NO ONE TOLD ME ABOUT THESE!
I also tried sumo citrus oranges and yes they were good, but nowhere NEAR as good as cara cara oranges.
Right now, Scaddabush has a pretty sweet family deal of a lasagna, salad & focaccia for $40 and it easily feeds four people, with leftovers.
Favourite tweets of the month ahead.
Some things that Iâm looking forward to this month: I will continue to watch and love all upcoming new Riverdale episodes (thank you season five for bringing this song back into my life), I might make these french onion stuffed shells because they sound insane, Iâm excited to watch Stanley Tucciâs CNN cooking show Searching For Italy, I might fall into the world of focaccia bread art, Iâd love to attempt ANY of these hairstyles, and Iâm so excited to hear when the final season of Shrill will finally air.
If youâve got any interest in reading last monthâs roundup, you can see what went down in December over here.
June Jaunts 2019
Happy Canada Day! Hereâs what went down last month.
I finally started taking collagen powder and I really think itâs working (thanks for the tip, Harmeet!) because my nails are longer than ever and my hair seems more luscious? I could just be feeling myself on the hair, though. Hard to tell for sure.
I made the mushroom garganelli pasta that I dream about from LâArtusi and it was phenomenal. The mushroom ragu tastes EXACTLY like it could be a meat sauce. Even Nathan agreed that it was amazing and he hates mushrooms. Makes zero sense. This dish is witchcraft.
Earlier this month, I finally overshared about what our new apartment looks like, if youâd care to take a look.
Made my way to see the new Camp exhibit at The Met.
Saw Late Night, and while I will always support that vision of a woman, the movie was only okay. Very specific opinion, but I wish Cate Blanchett had played the main character.
Speaking of Mindy, look at this gorgeous, perfect outfit.
Remember those flavoured powders for popcorn that were popular a few years ago? How have I never thought of making a homemade dill topping for at-home popcorn?! HOW?! Such a good idea.
Watched the Black Mirror episode Striking Vipers and loved it, I donât want to even watch the other two new ones because how could they possibly be better than that one. (Also, are we really calling three episodes a season? Get real.)
I have made Ina Gartenâs rigatoni with sausage & fennel so many times this month and Iâm still not sick of it, such a crazy good pasta. Especially if youâre trying to impress someone.
IDEA: Turn burger buns into garlic bread, THEN eat as part of a burger.
I donât know why but I finished The Big Bang Theory. I know, itâs embarrassing to admit. It was not a good show!
âNOTHER IDEA: Clean your Apple headphones with toothpicks! Totally didnât know you could do this. And if you havenât, you really should. Some nasty stuff gets up in there. Itâs pretty satisfying to clean, too. Just do it in private.
Tried the (super tiny) burger at Whitâs End in Rockaway and yes it was good, but WHERE WAS THE REST OF IT?!
I rewatched Waiting To Exhale (I think I saw it when I was a kid) and man, that movie holds up. So, so good.
So in love with this brand. I donât love the phrase Toronto VS. Everybody, but if they make a Mississauga one? WATCH OUT.
Love this New Yorker piece my Dad sent me about getting a dog.
Gotta be honest, kinda excited to see the glaze waterfall. You know what makes Krispy Kreme better than most donuts? Not a lot of doughiness inside. The best kind of donut showcases the outside coating. A KK donut is all outside coating. Itâs practically hollow on the inside. This is the secret. I could go on about this, but Iâve already said too much.
Completely forgot about the show You Wish, which I canât stop watching. Summertime sadness?
Saw the new Childâs Play as well as the old one. Obviously the old one is better, but the new one really isnât that bad. Human murderers are always better than robot murderers.
Excited for Samantha Irbyâs book that comes out next year.
Everyone should make this panzanella salad. It is profoundly good. I added fresh mozzarella to it and it only got better. I didnât even add the avocado OR corn and still licked the bowl.
I keep reading this over and over, trying to make it stick.
I will forever hate places that are cashless. How are we not all on the same page about this?! (Iâm looking at you, ARGO TEA.)
SUCH a good fish recipe. And these are hard to come by. Or maybe it was just the sauce. A good sauce can trick you sometimes.
Saw Ma in theatres and you know what it really wasnât bad, whatever anyone tells you. I think Iâd classify it as wacky as hell.
This is honestly the best egg salad Iâve ever had. Itâs definitely due to the addition of dill pickle juice (fucking nuts for dill this month) and the elimination of celery.
Found maybe the best poutine in this country at The Astorian in Queens.
I started using Benefitâs Mini Gimme Brow and itâs cool?? Honestly, I donât even know. Sometimes I think I need another, smarter woman to just sit me down and tell me whatâs good and whatâs not. This is supposed to help make thin eyebrows look bushy, right? If that is actually its intent, then itâs doing its job correctly.
All right, look. You KNOW that I hate having opinions on celebrities (ie. people NONE OF US KNOW), but Iâm putting a hold on that for a sec. Hereâs who I hated this month: Amber Rose (or anyone repping any fucking laxative tea), Bernie Sanders (the arrogance that comes off of this man⊠I canât stand it, he doesnât have all of the answers, can we please stop acting like heâs some sort of savior), and Chris Brown. How is Chris Brown still someone people are in love with? How are people still okay with him? MAN BEATS PEOPLE. For fuck sake.
Love this exchange so much.
Never had Georgian food before but itâs pretty much just bread and cheese and Iâm 100% fine with that, culturally speaking.
I will never make all of her recipes, but a third cookbook very much excites me.
Itâs taken me years to understand that Modern Family just isnât good. There are two good characters. Thatâs it, thatâs the trick theyâre playing on us all.
Is it a good idea to watch How Stella Got Her Groove Back? Always.
I have zero opinion on Harry Potter, but I canât wait to experience this new ride in Florida.
And that was June! Some things Iâd like to do this month: visit Profundo Day Club for the rooftop pool, find some humidity-proof houseplants (recommendations welcome), spend some time in Coney Island, try to see Crawl and maybe make some fun food for the 4th of July.

October Occurrences
This is how I feel when October comes to a close.
Even though this is technically still the best time of year (the leaves are gorgeous, Christmas is coming, the first snowfall is only a few weeks away, a fresh year is quickly approaching), itâs always hard for me to say goodbye to October. Maybe thatâs one reason why this post is so late? I couldnât bring myself to actually move on? In any case, November has begun. So hereâs what went down in my world last month.
The family and I took a train ride along the South Simcoe Railway on their autumn leaves tour and it was prrrretty cute.
I have officially introduced Riverdale into the lives of four other human beings in my life. Do you understand how crazy that is? I feel like every person on the planet is constantly telling everyone else what show they should be watching and weâre all silently ignoring so many of these recommendations because thereâs simply not enough time to watch everything that everyone says is great. So when someone actually gets into this show - it makes me immensely happy. Itâs just a pure show. Anyway, the new season started and itâs great and Iâll continue to scream about how much I love it. Iâve also started following Skeet Ulrich on Instagram and I think this is the first time Iâve intensely wanted to send inappropriate things to a stranger since I was a teenager? Feels weird.
Watched the first episode of Kidding and really couldn't get into it. Will always love Jim Carrey but this one seems like a hard one to latch onto.
Watched an episode of Rel and all I can really say about it is that Sinbad is the best part. So I guess thatâs something. I donât think itâs possible to make a good family sitcom these days and I donât know why that is.
Watched the movie Wild and it was really good. In the same way that I really liked Under The Tuscan Sun. I love love love movies about women that arenât centered around a love interest. The scene where the little boy sings to her made me weep for some reason.
Took a break from The Twilight Zone for a bit and then got right back into it with the episodes The Mask & Number 12 Looks Like You - and man⊠this is one of the best shows of all time. Better than Black Mirror. Better than everything!
Rewatched Friday the 13th Part 4 and itâs still a good horror movie, but not as good as I remember. Hate when that happens.
Have you ever seen the kids movie The Halloween Tree? Iâd never seen or heard of it before recently and I really liked it. I know this is a common thought amongst people who cling to the past, but the animation back then was way better than it is today.
Speaking of kids movies, I saw the second Goosebumps movie with my family and the first one was better? Needed more Jack Black.
Finally watched Popstar at my brotherâs insistence and it was really funny.
So obviously I saw the new Halloween. There was no way it couldâve been good, I realize this, but I went anyway because you have to go. The main problem with it? You see Michael Myers WAY too much. Itâs ridiculous. Itâs not scary if youâre constantly seeing his face. Anyway, the original is really the only good one anyway and Iâm fine with that. I forced my niece Layla to watch that one on VHS and thatâs the only way that movie should ever be watched, in my opinion. Itâs perfect.
FINALLY saw Trick R Treat and of course itâs terrible! Donât even remember why Iâd wanted to see this one so badly. Maybe âcause the cover looks so good. I love bags on heads.
Watched Fright Night for the first time and it wasnât terrible, but dear Christ, that kid who played the best friend? Definitely the worst actor on planet earth. WOOF.
Iâve only watched the first episode of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina but Iâm in love with how dark it is so far. I could also relate to all the half breed talk! And Balkiâs in it! Excited to see if the coming episodes are as good.
I was on Nathanâs podcast again! Think this is the best one weâve done together.
I have seen so many posts about how good On The Bun is in Mississauga and⊠what the hell? Itâs average at best. The Burgerâs Priest is eons better (and thereâs a Mississauga location at Eglinton & Hurontario now too).
Speaking of good food places in Mississauga, Luca Pizza will now and forever be the only place Iâll force my family to order pizza from. So crazy good!
Tried some of the poutine at Costco and itâs almost identical to the old St. Hubert one that existed years ago. Itâs eerie.
Thereâs a (somewhat new) Nordstrom Rack in Heartland in Mississauga and IT IS GREAT. If I were to describe why itâs so good, Iâd go so far as to say itâs a higher-end/better/still affordable version of Winners.
Gary came to visit from Scotland and whenever he comes I try to make him sightread something that I love on piano and he never disappoints.
Of course the family and I went on our annual Downeyâs visit.
I never go to Krispy Kreme mainly because, well, do I have to have a reason? Their donuts are insanity on a plate so I just need to not be near the building. That being said, my niece Layla really wanted to go so we did. And if you ever happen to be there right when the apple fritters come out of the oven? It will easily be the best tasting thing youâll ever put in your mouth. That being said, they are dense and pretty rough once cold. Not sure how that makes sense, but itâs probably a good thing. The longstanding best apple fritters are still at San Remoâs in Etobicoke.
I hadnât been to Playdium in Mississauga in maybe fifteen years, I canât believe itâs still even there. STILL SO FUN. Really hope teenagers are still going on dates here and making out in the go kart line.
My friend Marla gave birth to the sweetest little boy, her second son!
There is new Salted Caramel Coffee Crisp and it is nuts. Watch yourself.
Went to the ROM for I think the first time (?) and it was very meh! I mean, I think it was good technically? I donât know what I was expecting. Also, maybe Iâm being mean about it because the museums in New York are so much bigger and better? I realize thatâs a pretty dickish thing to say and yet Iâm not deleting it.
Absolutely love everything about this video (below).
Went to the CN Tower with my family and I havenât been in such a long time, still a good time.
I finally started trying out recipes from Chrissy Teigenâs newest cookbook. The âTaters, Shrooms & Peas with Parmesan Creamâ recipe was incredibly annoying to make mainly due to the instruction of âmicrowaving your potatoesâ - why on earth would that ever be an easier way to cook a potato? It took so long with the trial and error of deciding how much water was needed to actually cook them in a microwave, and incredibly frustrating. And it didnât even taste amazing! So Iâll definitely never make that one again. Her âJalapeño-Cheddar Corn Puddingâ though? AMAZING. I was blown away at how good that tasted. The serving size was so crazy off, though, which seemed odd. It couldâve fed twenty people. So since Iâm one for two, Iâm excited to try other recipes from the book soon.
I went to Halloween Haunt at Canadaâs Wonderland with Layla, her friends and Harmeet and it was such a fun time. The best part of the whole thing are the actors who jump out to scare you, for sure.
Iâm not a huge Starbucks fan (I canât seem to find a drink thatâs not terrible for you & actually tastes good), but since they put out a Halloween drink, obviously I had to try it. The witchâs brew frappuccino was actually pretty good! PURE sugar, but good for exactly two sips. The chia seeds were so weird and good.
I finally saw Tews Falls! Been wanting to see this baby for awhile.
I took Harmeet to Long Point Eco Adventures to stay in a camping pod for one night and it was really, really nice. Our stargazing tour did get cancelled because of the clouds, so we made the most of the evening by going across the street to the Burning Kiln Winery and it was a great time. If you know anything about me, you should be aware that this is the only way that Iâd ever âcamp.â On the drive back, we saw some insanely large pumpkins for sale so I obviously bought one and itâs probably the greatest thing Iâve ever spent money on.
Will never get sick of how New York looks at night.
Baby Dog had an extremely relaxing month.
It should be obvious, but of course this Halloween was the best one in years, mainly because itâs been so long since Iâve given out candy to trick-or-treaters. You already saw my costume. A huge thank you goes to my mom who sewed the zipper onto that red sweater and who allowed me to yell at her for an hour whilst trying to take the perfect costume photo. No idea why some of the people in my life let me get away with murder sometimes, but super thankful for them. So many things happened on Halloween that itâs kind of a blur to me now. I made this craft that really worked out well, I got sick of my costume so I did a Halloween inspired makeup look for the evening, I watched horror movies on a loop all day - everything was perfect.
Canât get over how much stuff happened this month. Excited for November!
(If you have any interest in past monthly roundups, they can be found here: September 2018, August 2018, July 2018, June 2018 & May 2018.)
Seinfeld Pop-up Coming to Toronto This Summer
The bar is expected to open this summer in the Toronto's west end in the form of the sitcom's iconic diner. A launch party is set for July 15, according to a Facebook page, which also indicates the address is in the Dundas Street West and Dufferin Street area. The pop-up promises to be a replica of Monk's Cafe, essentially and will run all summer long!
The page says that there will be a full kitchen serving Kenny Rogers chicken, calzones, marble rye sandwiches, Junior Mints, and boxes of cereal. The event page says pre-sale tickets will be coming soon. Intrigued!
10 Things To Do Before Christmas
I know that I'm still working on my autumn list of things to do, but here's the thing - autumn and Christmastime kind of overlap since the first day of winter is December 21st (did you think it was in November? 'Cause I did up until MAYBE last year). Anyway, Christmastime is happening and Imma get all up in it this year. Here's what I want to do.
Have drinks at the Waldorf Astoria. I've only done this once before and it was beautifully decorated for the holidays, so I really want to go again. (Update: since itâs 2022 and the Waldorf is still under construction - a better suggestion would be The Plaza or The Peninsula.)
Bake those cupcakes with the ice cream cone Christmas tree because those look badass.
Donate any old blankets, clothes & shoes (if you have kids, it might be a good idea to donate some of their old toys).
Mail our (personalized) Christmas cards. It'd be weird if this didn't happen.
Look for local Christmas fairs to visit (like these in New York or these in Toronto).
Decorate the house and put up the tree!
Go see the decorations at The Plaza Hotel & Macy's.
Buy some mistletoe at Trader Joe's.
Take a family portrait.
I encourage you to make a list of your own, not because I love lists but because if you do make one, then you're likely to actually complete some of these things and have a memorable December.
Nutella Cafe in Toronto
Canada's first Nutella outpost! The cafĂ© will offer basically every single pastry you could ever want, stuffed with Nutella and it'll be open from 7am to 9pm daily at the Spadina Sobeyâs location at 22 Fort York Blvd.
